The White Lotus: 8 Clues We Found In The Season Finale Trailer
It's almost time to check out of The White Lotus... and one of its characters is checking out permanently.
HBO's luxury hotel dramedy will wrap up its third season this Sunday at 9/8c, and we know at least one person isn't making it out of the finale alive, based on the flash-forward we saw in the season premiere. It's appropriate, then, that the trailer for Sunday's season finale is packed with ominous warnings about death, which can come in seemingly endless varieties. Stabbings! Drownings! Poison fruit! (And here we were thinking Thailand looked so peaceful.)
To help pass the time until the White Lotus finale arrives, we here at TVLine thought we'd do a deep dive into the Season 3 finale trailer to find what clues it holds about who's going to die, and any other twists that series creator Mike White is ready to throw at us. (After the season we've had, we wouldn't rule anything out at this point.) Scroll down to see the eight clues we found in the final White Lotus trailer of the season (which you can watch in full below), and then join us in the comments to let us know if you caught anything we missed.
8. The poison fruit is back
Yes, a popular fan theory this season involves the poisonous fruit tree outside the Ratliffs' hotel suite, and sure enough, Timothy asks Pam, "When we got here, you said something about this fruit?" Pam tells him "locals actually call it 'the suicide tree'... so don't eat it." But we see Tim picking the fruit anyway, and later, we hear Saxon's blender whirring away. With his gun gone, will Tim decide to off himself and his family with (gasp!) a batch of poisoned smoothies? That seems too obvious after this trailer, though, so we have to think Mike White will flip that expectation on its head in some way.
7. Greg still wants an answer
In the trailer, Belinda and her son Zion pay another visit to Greg/Gary's house, and she still seems reluctant to take Greg's offer of a fat paycheck to stay quiet, telling Zion: "I'm not doing this. It's a waste of time." She tells Zion it's time to go, and Greg doesn't exactly look pleased. So will he make sure she doesn't talk... by taking matters into his own hands?
6. Gaitok is ready to man up
After both his boss and his prospective girlfriend Mook encouraged him to find his killer instinct, Gaitok is taking charge in the finale, it looks like, telling his boss he has something to say. His boss asks if it's about the robbery, and we see a shot of Gaitok staring down Valentin, who we now know distracted Gaitok to let his pals Aleksei and Vlad rob the hotel. Later in the trailer, we see Gaitok running urgently, gun in hand — to prove his manhood with violence, perhaps?
5. Rick and Chelsea get a happy reunion... or do they?
The trailer contains a swoon-worthy scene where Chelsea happily runs into Rick's arms and they smile and hug each other on the beach. But it also shows us Chelsea begging Rick: "Please don't do something stupid." Rick assures her, "I'm gonna be OK"... but we're not so sure he is. Is that romantic beach scene a dream sequence, maybe? Or... the last thing Rick sees before he dies?
4. Laurie made it back safe and sound
We were a little worried about Laurie after last week's episode, when she narrowly escaped a beating from Aleksei's jealous ex and then got a ride home from a shady taxi cab. But she made it back to the hotel, according to the trailer, which shows us Laurie looking on as Jaclyn and Kate frolic in the pool together. We also see all three ladies lounging by the pool, so Laurie's safe — for now, at least.
3. Frank is a dangerous man
We see just a split-second of Rick's pal Frank smoking a cigarette and plunging what looks like a knife into some kind of mannequin. Is he ready to respond with lethal force if Jim Hollinger and his goons come looking for him and Rick? (And can we get this guy some chamomile tea, stat?)
2. Someone drowns?
We've been worried about someone getting shot all season long, but in the trailer, we see someone's arm reaching up helplessly as they sink deeper into the water. Could the guns be a red herring, and really, someone drowns in the finale instead?
1. Monkeys!
We can't help but notice all the shots of monkeys in the season finale trailer, after all the shots of monkeys in every episode this season. Another popular fan theory, albeit a wild one, says that the gunfire we hear in the premiere actually starts when a monkey gets a hold of a gun and starts firing. Could all these monkey shots be a hint that it's not even a human who kicks off the gunfight, but a fellow primate?
