A Full Circle Moment

What would a series finale be without a montage to The Goldbergs‘ early seasons, including scenes of a younger Adam and departed family members Murray (played by Jeff Garlin) and Pops (George Segal)?
Speaking about his vision for the episode, Barnow says, “We really just wanted to capture the sense of where we started from and where we’re ending. In the finale montage, it was really important for us to see the children when they were young… and where we’re ending up: Erica with a husband and baby, Beverly potentially moving on with a new love interest, Adam with his girlfriend and driving off into the future, Barry getting married. So it’s really trying to bookend something that’s basically impossible, which is a lifetime with these people, 10 years with these people.”
And while we don’t know exactly where every character ultimately ended up, “I think their futures look positive and happy,” Barnow shares.
As for whether the EPs spoke to creator and former showrunner Adam F. Goldberg about the series finale, Bishop says, “We did not. We hope we honored his original vision for the show, and I hope when he sees it, he’s proud.”
I thought that was the case, that they didn’t have time to prepare a proper sendoff to the show.
I kept on thinking of Schooled and thought that with this season of the Goldbergs and Lainey’s appearance this year, that somewhere in the last few episodes Joanne and Barry would break up permanently and Barry, while maybe not get together, get inspired by his ex to sort of set up for what happened with Barry and Erica in Schooled.
Yes I was going to make the same point. that in “Schooled” it looked like Barry was single. So what happened? Now we will never know as both series have been cancelled.
In Schooled Erica and Geoff also were not married. They were together and had kids but they were not married. So they already changed the story from that. In the episode they had Erica pretend she wasn’t with Geoff at first because she didn’t want to bum her out with her relationship status. If Schooled had continued I want Lainey with C.B. any way and not Barry.
I never understood why the writers were trying so hard to get us invested in the Barry-Joanne relationship anyway.
Before she even had appeared in The Goldbergs, the spin-off set in the 90s had Barry and Lainey dating again. No one was going to get invested in a relationship that was doomed before it started playing out in the 80s.
Exactly! Especially since Geoff didn’t even HAVE a sister until quite a few seasons in. It’s like when they gave Sarah Michelle Gellar the “instant” little sister in Buffy. Everyone was like “Where did she come from?” I don’t mind Barry having other girlfriends besides Lainey but that wasn’t well planned.
I’m sorry but we as an audience deserved better closure for a show that’s been on for 10 SEASONS! The exes could’ve given them a heads up…the fans and every crew member deserved that! Not to be told 4 days after the final day so that barely anything could be changed (just in editing) and they could do their proper goodbyes as a cast and crew. ABC…you people are cr@p! IMO, after a few seasons, shows deserve to have (and give the audience) a proper goodbye! Ridiculous
Don’t blame ABC, blame these writers they interviewed making excuses. They could’ve done actual work to rewrite last minute and do SOMETHING good. It’s par for the course, these last 3 seasons were awful and I felt bad for the actors.
You don’t understand a production schedule at all do you? They don’t get to go back and re-write and re-shoot. It was wrapped already.
Exactly. They might have been able to make it happen if ABC had insisted and thrown more money at it, since it was still pretty close to the wrapping and it’s possible not all the sets were torn down yet and such, but since that seemingly didn’t happen, this is what we get. :( I thought they had announced it soon enough for a proper ending. I’m so bummed that wasn’t the case and this is what we get. I thought it would end with Adam getting some big break and off to start his Hollywood dream finally.
Also a going away party for him that could have had a bunch more of the characters we’ve seen…. Dave Kim, Johnny & Carla, etc. Even Mr. Glasscott wasn’t in the series finale!
You are so right! The rest of the characters should have been in the last show. So disappointed.
A good show but it should’ve ended sooner.
they had more than enough time to shoot a proper ending they chose not too. they could have shot a last episode, j was very disappointed in this episode, i was expecting more for watching the show for 10 years.
Actually they didn’t
I didn’t know that this was the series finale until today. I just absolutely loved this show. It’s kind of rare these days to watch a show’s characters grow up before your eyes and be so entertaining. I wondered how they would handle real life event like the death of George Segal and the issue of Jeff Garlin’s departure. With George it was a beautiful tribute to a great actor and equally great character. The death of Murray was sad, but it was well done. I will really miss the Goldbergs. I wish there would be just one more season.♥️
Show runners: we didn’t know a decade is 10 years. We had no idea this would be the end.
Like MASH, the show did not take place in real time. “1980-something” is whatever they wanted.
Not true. “1980 Something” only works if the show had only run for a few years. The show ran for a FULL DECADE with everybody aging chronologically. They didn’t jump around in age. With that in mind, the first season has to be 1980, the second season has to be 1981, and so on straight through to 1989.
The finale should have been adult Adam Goldberg (the narrator) in the present day showing his home movie video tapes to his children.
The 10 seasons of the show did not equal an actual 10 years in real time. Adam was mentioned in the finale as being almost 20. He was not 10 years old in the first season. I believe he was supposed to be about 13.
In the same season 1 episode, you notice posters and toys from 1988-89 in Adam’s room, they listen and make references to a 1987 song, then goes out to the movie theater for the premiere of a film released in 1981.
Adam attended the same high school and graduated in season 9 finale. Doesn’t make linear sense.
Man, I was hoping for a Lanie and Barry reunion.
They had plenty of time to give this series a proper ending; one that was 2-3 seasons overdue. This felt like just another episode with that ending being tacked on at the last minute (literally).
“A Series Finale That Wasn’t Meant to Be the End”?
How dumb is it for a series to wait until it has already wrapped production forever to announce “final season”? Any unresolved storylines? Given the poor ratings for The Goldbergs for the past couple of years, its wrap should’ve been announced before, like last December or something.
The producers didn’t know, it was a network decision. The producers thought there was a chance they would be renewed for an eleventh season. It should have ended when the real Adam Goldberg left as showrunner.
“The producers thought there was a chance they would be renewed for an eleventh season.”
I don’t see how that would have been realistic.
“The producers thought there was a chance they would be renewed for an eleventh season. ”
Based on the reasons I stated previously, I just don’t see how that would have been realistic. Now we’re going to have legions of fans talking about how they would’ve wrapped up The Goldbergs‘s themselves.
It’s unfortunate that Adam F. Goldberg was shut out for the finale and for the later seasons. It showed. A lot.
As for whether the EPs spoke to creator and former showrunner Adam F. Goldberg about the series finale, Bishop says, “We did not. We hope we honored his original vision for the show, and I hope when he sees it, he’s proud.”
-Translation, we just wrote whatever because we are cashing a paycecks. These writers who took over are just the worst and I hope they never get hired again. I can answer this, you did not honor his original vision. The guy has said so himself and I guarantee he is not proud if he ever does watch this lame finale.
The Goldbergs went down fast after George Segal’s death, Jeff Garlin’s exit came after the show had gone way downhill but didn’t help. Good riddance to a once pretty good show. Oh, and this final episode wasn’t any different or better than the bad unfunny and formulaic shows of the past few seasons.
The finale was robbed of what was an amazing show of 10 years. It seemed rushed and all over the place. Was hoping for maybe a 1.5 hour special or something but it was just like any other episode. Not special. The show deserved better than that so did long time fans.
Very disappointing ending to a very good show. I felt like I wasted 10 yrs of my life being emotionally invested in these characters to have it end the way it did. Nothing was tied up and this episode was all over the place. Shame on you ABC and shame on you writers for the one of the worst series ending in the history of television!!
Wasted 10 years? Seriously? You got 10 years of entertainment, and you are complaining. You got some serious entitlement issues, buddy.
Why would they give Beverly a bald guy as her (old high school) and possibly renewed romance when her own hair was almost a character on the show? He presumably wasn’t bald in high school and she didn’t blink an eye when she saw him hairless.
I think the show jumped the shark a while a go it was like they were writing on the fly with no real direction I liked the show it just over stayed it’s welcome
The Goldbergs should ended with the family celebrating the new decade the 90s.
Not some high school reunion. Or at least have Adam go to NYU…🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
As a fan of almost everyone involved in the show, both in front of and behind the camera, (SECUNDA!) it pains me to admit that I gave up on the series very early in season 8. I’m sorry for those out of jobs and for those that kept watching without getting a proper resolution. But honestly, I’m sort of glad that the animated corpse of a once great show has been put out of its misery.
Really hate to see it go . So few of this family, type show left. I will miss it like many others that have gone. Have good life Goldbergs!
I will really miss this show. Good family entertainment and some of the best characters on TV. Shame that with 10 seasons and a spin-off, they couldn’t give it a better send-off than a generic season-ending storyline. Will always remember bingeing 7 seasons over 2 weeks.
It wasn’t the greatest finale. You had to know we deserved a better finale. Barry & Joann, yuck. Erica and Geoff were the best couple on the show.
I actually prefer these “de facto finales”, a lot of shows, especially long running ones, try to hard with their series finale and there’s so much anticipation you’re bound to be let down. There’s always some big event that brings all the characters together, someone gets life changing news, and everyone goes their separate ways. I hate it. As long as it doesn’t end on a cliffhanger where the writers had no idea they’d be canceled, I like when shows end on plan b. It’s much more satisfying imho, and if you disagree then tell me you think Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life is better than the season 7 finale.
They could’ve ended last year when he graduated high school but they decided to beat a dead horse one more year,
Last year’s graduation combined with the new baby would have been better for a series finale, definitely.
I understand writers rushed before a potential strike, and ABC announced finale season Feb 23, but, let’s be honest, all online commenters on social medias wished the show should have been cancelled by the end of season 9.
But international sales and syndication were so lucrative, ABC ordered a surprise (and unnecessary) season 10. Remember “Fresh Off the Boat” surprise renewal? Anyways, the writing was on the wall since last summer, only writers remained in denial.
With the loss of Adam F. Goldberg who was the creator when he left Sony. And loss George Segal who played pops. The look like they used old scripts with new characters that just did not work. Then the show became all about Beverly.
Seasons 1 – 6 were terrific. The last 4 have been OK. Still better than a lot of others shows on TV. Will miss it. My only main gripe is poor Barry (the real one). They made him such an idiot, that it’s a wonder if he actually makes it through med school. (Real Barry is a very good doctor)
