The Raising Hope creator has enlisted his former stars for Sprung, “a madcap, fish-out-of-water story” that focuses on “an unlikely group of formerly incarcerated people who band together to use their criminal expertise for good,” according to the official logline.
The series follows Dillahunt’s Jack, a nonviolent offender who is released from prison early due to the coronavirus. With nowhere to go, fellow parolee Rooster (Scandal‘s Phillip Garcia) tells Jack he can stay with him and his mother Barb (Plimpton). From there, adventures ensue that are “as hilarious as they are heartwarming.”
Rounding out the ensemble are Shakira Barrera (GLOW) as Gloria, James Earl (Ground Floor) as Melvin and newcomer Clare Gillies as Wiggles. Kate Walsh (Grey’s Anatomy) guest-stars as Congresswoman Paula Tackleberry. Watch a trailer above.
Dillahunt and Plimpton previously worked together on the aforementioned Fox comedy Raising Hope, which ran from 2010 to 2014. The series starred Lucas Neff as Jimmy Chance, a 23-year-old who impregnated a serial killer during a one-night stand. After earning custody of his unexpected daughter Hope, Jimmy relied on his dysfunctional family — including parents Burt (Dillahunt) and Virginia (Plimpton) — to help raise her.
Sprung, meanwhile, arrives Friday, Aug. 19 on Amazon Freevee (fka IMDb TV). Two episodes will be released each week, culminating in the Sept. 16 finale. Scroll down for first-look photos, then hit the comments and tell us if you’ll be watching.
