Overcompensating: 5 Reasons The Prime Video Comedy Needs To Be Renewed For Season 2
This is a story about a girl named Overcompensating — and why she needs to come back for a sophomore run.
Prime Video's college-set comedy, which released all 10 episodes back in May, has yet to be renewed for Season 2, but we're hoping it will be. (And it should be.) After all, Overcompensating landed in TVLine's Dream Emmys shortlist for Outstanding Comedy Series, while Benito Skinner earned a spot on our shortlist for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, and Adam DiMarco is among our picks for Best Supporting Actor for his work as Grade-A college jerk Peter.
We are simply desperate for another year at Yates University, where we fell in love with Benny and Carmen, came to understand frat culture on a painfully deep level and affirmed our love of "Super Bass" as a college anthem. (Not to mention, we've even come around to Grace!)
So, in case there was any question — and on the off chance Prime Video is reading this — let's keep singing this show's praises while its fate remains unknown. Below are the top five reasons Overcompensating absolutely must return for a Season 2.
So Many Cameos!
Season 1 boasted so many surprising, hilarious and charming cameos from plenty of recognizable stars. From a poster of Megan Fox coming alive to Las Culturistas besties Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang playing a married couple, the series got creative with its cameos. Yates University welcomed so many guests — James Van Der Beek, Charli XCX, Kaia Gerber, Caleb Hearon, Connie Britton and Kyle MacLachlan — that we can't help but wonder who might show up in a second season.
Hailee! Hailee! Hailee!
From her little fingernail puffs to her absolutely hilarious reactions to pretty much anything anyone does, we aren't done with our favorite roommate yet. So many of our Overcompensating laughs came courtesy of Holmes' performance as the over-the-top funny friend. (We'll be quoting her "chicken Carmen-giano" bit until we perish.) We simply can't imagine saying goodbye to this girl so soon!
It Has a Killer Soundtrack
Each episode of the series is named after one song that mimics the events of that installment. For instance, Episode 1, titled "Lucky," opened with the eponymous Britney Spears anthem. The song itself acted as the perfect introduction to the series: It's set to a catchy rhythm, but when you listen to the lyrics you realize it tells a sad story. As it turned out, Overcompensating shared a similarly glitzy exterior paired with a heart-wrenching narrative. And as the series carried on, the soundtrack continued to interact with the stories playing out on screen.
Additional episodes highlighted Charli XCX's "Boom Clap," Lady Gaga's "The Edge of Glory" and My Chemical Romance's "Welcome to the Black Parade" — all iconic choices made by the show's aforementioned executive music producer, Charli XCX.
Benny Deserves a Chance to Fall in Love
The entire freshman run centered on Benny's efforts to mask his true identity and stay in the closet. Now that he's started to explore his own sexuality, it's high time the man falls in love! While he's gotten to kiss his high school crush Sammy (played by Lukas Gage), he hasn't gotten to dabble much in the dating world. We want to have the chance to watch our beloved Benny relate to his sexuality in fun ways, not just live in fear of being found out.
That Cliffhanger Needs to Be Resolved
Season 1 ended with a dramatic cliffhanger: Carmen accidentally outed Benny in front of everyone. This came after Carmen kissed Benny's crush Miles, Grace revealed she knew Carmen had slept with her boyfriend, and the whole group ousted Peter.
As a result, there are plenty of loose ends to tie up in Season 2: Will Benny and Carmen be able to mend their friendship? How will Grace react to Benny being gay? Could Miles still be interested in Benny? Will Grace confront Carmen over her big betrayal? Plus, where will Peter fit into all this? Has he really landed a job in New York, or will he become a college town townie?
