Postponed FBI Season Finale Set To Air In October — Jeremy Sisto Previews The 'Heavy Blow' Jubal Will Be Dealt

FBI's Season 4 finale — which was pulled at the last minute in late May, in the wake of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas — has been rescheduled to air early in Season 5.

Specifically, the episode "Prodigal Son" will now debut on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 8/7c, TVLine has learned.

On May 24 of this year, 19 children and two teachers were killed when a gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. (The 18-year-old suspect was also killed.) Seventeen others were shot during the incident, including two police officers.

"Prodigal Son" was pulled from CBS' schedule hours before it was to air, due to its premise: "As the team investigates a deadly robbery that garnered a cache of automatic weapons for the killers, they discover one of the perps is a classmate of Jubal's son, who is reluctant to cooperate with the case."

TVLine has screened the episode in question, and the decision to pull it at the time was just, given how the Case of the Week involves Jubal's team working to prevent a mass shooting. But beyond that broad stroke, the episode delivers a compelling exploration of how Jubal, amidst a crisis that may or may not involve his own son, navigates his already-delicate relationship with Tyler. As established on the series, Tyler, who in Season 3 was diagnosed with leukemia, is grappling with highly complex emotions and deep pangs of loneliness — and, he suddenly began using his mother's maiden name, instead of Valentine, as his own surname.

TVLine invited Jeremy Sisto, who plays Jubal, to answer some questions about "Prodigal Son"; read his emailed responses below.

What about this episode are you most proud of?

"I haven't seen the episode. I'll be watching with everyone else, so I can't speak to the final product," Sisto tells TVLine, "but I was very impressed with [executive producer/showrunner] Rick Eid's script. He's a great writer, and this script really showcases his ability to tie the emotional character story to the action of the episode.

"As a parent you're always weighing what your child or a co-parent thinks is right to our own instincts," the actor continues. "Often it is smart to temper your reactions but, when you do, you run the risk of really letting your kid down. To see Jubal, who is constantly making big decisions with life or death consequences, make mistakes in this very different but equally important space makes the character so relatable."

As a father yourself, what sort of emotions did you go through in filming this episode?

"Jubal has been through a lot and he is in a pretty resilient place," says Sisto, "but when it starts to become clear to him how he may have failed his son (played by Caleb Reese Paul), it is a heavy blow.

"Tapping into that feeling is pretty easy for me," the actor shares. "It seems most parents these days feel like, no matter how much energy they are putting into doing what's best for their kids, they might be coming up short. Might just be a side effect of being responsible for someone you love that much."

How might the events of this episode inform the tension we sometimes see between Jubal and Sam?

"Co-parenting is a challenge no matter the circumstances," Sisto notes, "but Sam (played by Mara Davi) and Jubal have done an admirable job navigating their divorce — which was messy — and prioritizing the kids.

"Sam is very understanding," he adds. "She knew when she started a family with an FBI agent that Jubal's job would be demanding and she respects that. But when your kid is struggling, the last thing you want is your partner to minimize it. And she has to push up against it.

"Things get pretty hairy in this episode," Sisto previews, "and if the damage can't be undone, their lives will become very dark. But Sam is reasonable and compassionate, and she respects Jubal even when she is frustrated with him. And Jubal has nothing but respect for the mother of his kids."
