Super Women: Empowering Words From Scandal, Handmaid's Tale, Game Of Thrones, Veronica Mars And More

March 8 is International Women's Day, and one small way to commemorate the occasion is with a series of inspiring quotes and speeches from some of TV's most impressive female characters.

The global mission of International Women's Day is twofold — to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, as well as issue a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

In the list below, TVLine has singled out but a few memorable, and sometimes-iconic, speeches from the likes of Scandal's Olivia Pope, Parks and Recreation's Leslie Knope and The Handmaid's Tale's June — words that speak to strength, independence and or their refusal to be marginalized due to their gender. Or, in the case of Supergirl's Cat Grant, make a solid argument on behalf of "girl" power.  And we even have choice, hot-off-the-airwaves words from Wynonna Earp's recent return.

Review the examples we came up with below (video clips are handy/embedded for many of them), and then by all means chime in with any of your own favorite quotes from TV's impressive women!

Kelly Taylor, Beverly Hills, 90210

"You guys have made my life very difficult the past few days. It hasn't been easy, 'cause I love you both. You may not believe that, but it's true. [Hands Brandon an engagement ring] Brandon, I can't accept this. [Brandon starts to walk away] Wait, please. [Hands Dylan plane tickets] Dylan, have a nice trip. I can't go with you. Not this time. I've made my choice, and I choose me. I hope you understand. I'll love you both to the day I die."

– Kelly (Jennie Garth) makes an unexpected decision between Brandon and Dylan (Season 5, Episode 30)

Buffy Summers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

"In every generation, one Slayer is born, because a bunch of men who died thousands of years ago made up that rule. They were powerful men. This woman [points to Willow] is more powerful than all of them combined. So I say we change the rule. I say my power should be our power. Tomorrow, Willow will use the essence of the scythe to change our destiny. From now on, every girl in the world who might be a Slayer, will be a Slayer. Every girl who could have the power, will have the power. Can stand up, will stand up. Slayers, every one of us. Make your choice. Are you ready to be strong?"

— Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) tells her horde of potential Slayers that she's democratizing her power so they can win the fight against The First Evil (Season 7, Episode 22)

Veronica Mars, Veronica Mars

"Tragedy blows through your life like a tornado, uprooting everything, creating chaos. You wait for the dust to settle and then you choose. You can live in the wreckage and pretend it's still the mansion you remember. Or you can crawl from the rubble and slowly rebuild. Because after disaster strikes, the important thing is that you move on."

— Veronica (Kristen Bell) certainly knows a thing or two about being a survivor (Season 1, Episode 3)

Sue Hawk, Survivor: Borneo

"If I were ever to pass you along in life again, and you were laying there dying of thirst, I would not give you a drink of water. I would let the vultures take you and do whatever they want with you, with no ill regrets."

An unforgiving Sue cuts her nemesis Kelly down to size with an epic speech for the ages (Season 1, Episode 13)

Leslie Knope, Parks and Recreation

"I love this town, and when you love something, you don't threaten it. You don't punish it. You fight for it. You take care of it. You put it first. As your city councilor, I will make sure that no one takes advantage of Pawnee. If I seem too passionate, it's because I care. If I come on strong, it's because I feel strongly. And if I push too hard, it's because things aren't moving fast enough. This is my home. You are my family. And I promise you, I'm not going anywhere."

— Leslie (Amy Poehler) bests her competition in a debate during the campaign for city council (Season 4, Episode 20)

Cristina Yang, Grey's Anatomy

"Don't let what he wants eclipse what you need. He's very dreamy, but he is not the sun — you are."

Cristina (Sandra Oh) encourages Meredith not to revolve her world around Derek (Season 10, Episode 24)

Olivia Pope, Scandal

"I am not a toy you can play with when you are bored, or lonely, or horny. I am not the girl the guy gets at the end of the movie. I am not a fantasy. If you want me, earn me!"

— Olivia (Kerry Washington) is done being "summoned" to the Oval Office by her married beau (Season 2, Episode 20)

Ophelia Harkness, How to Get Away With Murder

"Sometimes, you gotta do what you gotta do. Even if all you've got is a long match and a very flammable hooch."

– Ophelia (the late great Cicely Tyson) tells Annalise how she "handled" Uncle Clyde (Season 1, Episode 12)

Lyanna Mormont, Game of Thrones

"Your son was butchered at the Red Wedding, Lord Manderly. But you refuse the call. You swore allegiance to House Stark, Lord Glover. But in their hour of greatest need, you refuse the call. And you, Lord Kerwin, your father was skinned alive by Ramsay Bolton, still, you refuse the call. But House Mormont remembers. The North remembers. We know no king but the King in the North whose name is Stark. I don't care if he's a bastard. Ned Stark's blood runs through his veins. He's my king, from this day until his last day!"

— Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey) shames the lily-livered men of the North into supporting Jon Snow as their leader (Season 6, Episode 10)

June, The Handmaid's Tale

They should have never given us uniforms if they didn't want us to be an army."

— June (Elisabeth Moss) dreams of rising up to fight against Gilead, once and for all (Season 1, Episode 10)

Ginny Baker, Pitch

"I don't need a speech from you today. I don't need a speech from you, or my father, or my brother, or my agent. I don't need some billionaire taking me all around the world as if I got nothing better to do. He can watch me train in Arizona if he wants to. I don't need a man to rescue me. I'm the one on the mound right now. Me. I throw the ball. I give the speeches. And I decide if you and I are going to talk about what happened the other night, not you. And I decided we're not, by the way, because we're teammates. And as long as we're teammates, that's how we're going to be. So go back to the plate and put down a sign. And let me finish my no-hitter."

— Ginny (Kylie Bunbury) throws Mike some verbal high heat (Season 1, Episode 10

Beth Dutton, Yellowstone

"You are the trailer park, I am the tornado."

Beth (Kelly Reilly) refuses to be blown away by Roarke's threats (Season 3, Episode 5)

Wynonna Earp, Wynonna Earp

"All I want is to stop feeling guilty for what I am, when what I am... is necessary."

Being a demon-hunting Earp (Melanie Scrofano) is not an easy job, but somebody's got to do it (Season 4, Episode 7)

Cat Grant, Supergirl

"I stuck a label on the side of this girl. I branded her. And what do you think is so bad about 'girl'? I'm a girl. And your boss. And powerful, and rich, and hot and smart. So if you perceive Supergirl as anything less than excellent... isn't the problem you?"

Cat (Calista Flockhart) deflects Kara's strenuous, "anti-feminist" objection to the new superhero's moniker
