Dancing With The Stars Makes Its Debut On Disney+ — Who Went Home First?

Dancing With the Stars has officially left the broadcast-TV ballroom — but it's samba'd right over to streaming.

Five months after it was first announced that Dancing would be moving from longtime home ABC to Disney+, the competition series made its debut on the streaming service Monday night, marking Disney+'s first foray into weekly live programming. (The streamer did previously experiment with live content back in June, when it broadcast Walt Disney World's Harmonious Live! fireworks display from Epcot.)

Aside from its new streaming home, Dancing has tinker(bell)ed with a few other aspects of the show: Host Tyra Banks is now joined by Fresh Prince alum and onetime Mirrorball winner Alfonso Ribeiro, for one, and the streaming-era version of the show doesn't feature any traditional commercial breaks. Plus, for the first time in recent memory, a couple was eliminated at the end of the premiere, instead of saving the first results for Episode 2.

On the whole, though, Disney+'s version of Dancing is a lot like ABC's version of Dancing, and Monday's season premiere featured the usual mix of pleasant surprises and works in progress on the dance floor. But who stood out — and who went home?

Grade the Season 31 debut in our poll below, then keep scrolling for a recap of Monday's performances and weigh in on the routines.

SAFE: Jordin Sparks and Brandon Armstrong

DANCE STYLE: Cha-Cha

As bubbly and smiley as ever, Jordin was the perfect choice for the first contestant of the night. Her dancing was a smidge timid at times — she could probably give about 20 percent more in future routines — but she displayed a commendable ease and rhythm out there.

JUDGES' SCORE: 26 out of 40

SAFE: Sam Champion and Cheryl Burke

DANCE STYLE: Foxtrot

Pleasant Surprise No. 1 of the evening, Sam delivered a foxtrot that was, sure, a little nervous in parts, but also quite elegant and charming for his first time on the dance floor.

JUDGES' SCORE: 20 out of 40

SAFE: Heidi D'Amelio and Artem Chigvintsev

DANCE STYLE: Cha-Cha

To her credit, Heidi admitted in her pre-performance package that she was nervous about dancing, and those nerves were evident in her reserved execution. But hey, you need at least a little confidence to do a full booty shake to the camera less than 30 seconds into your routine, and Heidi went all in on the twerkin'.

JUDGES' SCORE: 24 out of 40

SAFE: Jessie James Decker and Alan Bersten

DANCE STYLE: Cha-Cha

Jessie's dance moves weren't nearly as pitiful as she'd described them in her pre-performance package; she moved rather smoothly, in fact! The part that needs a little work? The shocked expression on Jessie's face for the duration of the routine.

JUDGES' SCORE: 20 out of 40

SAFE: Wayne Brady and Witney Carson

DANCE STYLE: Cha-Cha

We all saw this excellence coming, no? A longtime performer with Broadway credits on his résumé, Brady brought effortless charisma and skill to his Dancing debut. Let's put it this way: If your partner thinks you're equipped to handle an opening solo section in your first-ever routine, you're doing something right.

JUDGES' SCORE: 29 out of 40

SAFE: Daniel Durant and Britt Stewart

DANCE STYLE: Tango

Daniel is Dancing's third-ever deaf contestant, following Season 6 competitor Marlee Matlin and Season 22 winner Nyle DiMarco. After his first performance — wonderfully sure-footed and smooth — I wouldn't be surprised to see him hoisting the Mirrorball like DiMarco did.

JUDGES' SCORE: 27 out of 40

SAFE: Vinny Guadagnino and Koko Iwasaki

DANCE STYLE: Salsa

Well, there's always a Dancing premiere routine that leaves us saying "oof," and Vinny's was it. Everywhere you looked, wonky timing and messy footwork — but he was having fun, at least!

JUDGES' SCORE: 17 out of 40

SAFE: Trevor Donovan and Emma Slater

DANCE STYLE: Quickstep

And here we have Pleasant Surprise No. 2! Not only does Trevor have a legitimate fear of dancing, but he was first saddled with a quickstep — among the most dreaded styles for even the pros. And though Trevor's execution was a tad frenetic, it was also much, much more competent than I think any of us expected.

JUDGES' SCORE: 21 out of 40

SAFE: Gabby Windey and Val Chmerkovskiy

DANCE STYLE: Jive

Gabby sold herself way, way short in her pre-dance video, then came out and delivered a sassy, fun, extremely proficient jive. The legwork! The attitude! The way this was so much more exciting than anything to happen on The Bachelorette this season!

JUDGES' SCORE: 28 out of 40

SAFE: Cheryl Ladd and Louis Van Amstel

DANCE STYLE: Cha-Cha

Contestants of a certain age admittedly rarely fare well on Dancing With the Stars — but even though Cheryl is 71 years old, Louis' choreography almost felt too simple and slow for her. There's a clear passion in the Charlie's Angels vet, and a longtime love of this show, and I sense she's much more capable than her partner is currently allowing her to be.

JUDGES' SCORE: 21 out of 40

SAFE: Shangela and Gleb Savchenko

DANCE STYLE: Salsa

Surprising absolutely no one in the ballroom or at home, Shangela delivered energy and enthusiasm in spades. At times, that zeal threatened to bring her routine into manic territory — but as Bobby Bones can probably attest, better to have too much energy than not enough, no?

JUDGES' SCORE: 28 out of 40

SAFE: Joseph Baena and Daniella Karagach

DANCE STYLE: Jive

A bodybuilder and fitness model, Joseph is a big, muscular dude. And yet, those extensions? The elegant arms? The grace?! His jive wasn't perfect, with Joseph's large frame bringing some awkwardness to those kicks and flicks — but man, there's some serious, surprising potential there.

JUDGES' SCORE: 23 out of 40

SAFE: Selma Blair and Sasha Farber

DANCE STYLE: Viennese Waltz

There wasn't a dry eye in the ballroom after Selma's moving performance — and really, how could there be? Up against mobility and balance issues from her battle with multiple sclerosis, Selma still delivered a routine that was clean and sophisticated, packed with inevitable emotion from start to finish. (On a separate note, it's always nice to hear David Cook's "Time of My Life" now and again, "magic rainbow" lyric and all.)

JUDGES' SCORE: 28 out of 40

SAFE: Charli D'Amelio and Mark Ballas

DANCE STYLE: Cha-Cha

If you knew nothing about Dancing's Season 31 cast and tuned in casually to the premiere's final routine, you likely would have had no clue who was the contestant and who was the professional dancer. Charli's footwork and hip swivels were lightning-fast, and she kept up every step of the way with Mark's extremely intricate choreography.

JUDGES' SCORE: 32 out of 40

IN DANGER, SAVED BY JUDGES: Teresa Giudice and Pasha Pashkov

DANCE STYLE: Tango

Teresa flipping a table, Real Housewives-style, at the start of her routine was a fun touch, but she unfortunately didn't bring much personality to the performance once she and Pasha hit the floor. (Speaking of Pasha, did he wrong a producer or something? Carole Baskin in Season 29, now Teresa... who'd he hurt?)

JUDGES' SCORE: 20 out of 40

ELIMINATED: Jason Lewis and Peta Murgatroyd

DANCE STYLE: Cha-Cha

Jason's performance started out decently enough, then unfortunately devolved into something much more uncomfortable as the piece went on. From Jason's shaky timing to the awkward moment where he ran out of space on the dance floor, this cha-cha was among the evening's weakest, despite Jason's admirable game-for-anything attitude.
