Cobra Kai Series Finale: Where Did The Karate Drama Leave Your Favorites — And Who Won The Final Fight?
Cobra Kai never dies... but it does have to end.
And that it did Thursday, when Netflix dropped the series' last five episodes, setting the stage for one hell of a final fight between Johnny Lawrence and Sensei Wolf.
In the series' penultimate episode, Miguel (now fighting under the Cobra Kai name, led by Johnny) defeats Iron Dragons captain Axel Kovačević in the tournament's supposedly final battle. But after the points are tallied, the event results in a tie between our titular dojo and the nefarious Dragons. Fortunately, Gunther Braun and the tournament have a plan in place to determine a winner: The actual final fight will be fought by the senseis, themselves!
In the last episode titled "Ex-Degenerate," Johnny is back where he started in 1984: on the mat fighting for his pride and his dojo, right in the heart of the Valley. It's only natural that he ask Daniel to be his sensei for the biggest battle of his life. After some intense training that harnesses a flurry of Miyagi-Do teachings (cue an '80s-tastic montage set to the tune of Joe Esposito's "You're the Best" — a classic piece from the OG Karate Kid soundtrack), Johnny defeats his opponent by taking a page out of Daniel's book. Learning from the move that defeated him in '84 (Daniel's classic crane kick), he's able to wait for Wolf to come to him before moving in for the final strike that seals the Sekai Taikai win for Cobra Kai.
So what became of the rest of the characters including Robby, Tory, Sam, Hawk, Demetri and more? Scroll down to see where the finale left all of your series favorites — then vote in our polls and weigh in!
Sam & Miguel
After stepping away from the tournament to let Tory take the lead for Cobra Kai, Sam decides that she wants to move away for college after all. Far away. Although it takes a little courage to break the news to her dad, Sam sets her sights on Okinawa, Japan, planning to follow in Daniel's footsteps, karate training and experiences abroad.
So what does that mean for her and Miguel? Her karate champ boyfriend was supposed to head up to Stanford early for a summer program, but ultimately decides to put that off a little while longer. He shows up to the airport to greet Sam, figuring he'd fly over to Japan with her to help her settle in. Awww!
Robby & Tory
Tory, of course, becomes the female champion of the Sekai Taikai following Samantha LaRusso's exit from the tournament. As for Robby, after healing up from his knee injury (damn you, Axel!), he and Tory wind up scoring major deals with a marketing and branding company. They'll travel around to various tournaments to make appearances, sign autographs and essentially become martial arts influencers. And it's something they can do together... a life-changing career opportunity they both deserve!
The Binary Bros.
It was hard to watch "bros" Hawk and Demetri struggle to figure out their futures — and friendship — throughout the course of the season. But with the tournament officially behind them, both teens decide to reconcile their beef and attend CalTech together after all, despite Demetri's big push for MIT. (Can you say "spinoff?") Binary Bros. forever!
Daniel & Amanda
After a tearful goodbye to their daughter Sam, Daniel and Amanda presumably continue their success at LaRusso Auto. The friendship between Daniel and Johnny also continues, with Daniel helping Johnny through some further adulting. (Taxes! Who knew?)
And although we're bidding this chapter of the franchise farewell, it's not the last we'll see of Daniel-san. Ralph Macchio will star in Karate Kid: Legends alongside Jackie Chan, which hits theaters May 30. (Watch the trailer and hear Macchio talk about The Karate Kid's legacy here.)
Johnny (& Stingray!)
In the series finale, we learn that Johnny continues Cobra Kai's legacy, only this time, it's entirely on his terms — and they're opening a second location. It's even more perfect that Stingray is on hand to help Sensei Lawrence expand the brand and deal with the huge line of kids that floods out the dojo's door.
Students taking classes at the new and improved dojo include Kenny, Devon and Anthony LaRusso. (Cobra Kai: The New Class? Spinoff!) And since he now firmly believes that aggression isn't always the answer, Johnny's students will also be learning Miyagi-Do, which means field trips to Daniel's compound to do a little waxing-on and waxing-off. "Sometimes patience and defense are the keys to winning," he tells his kids. Unless you're trying to kill a fly, that is.
Kreese & Silver
In the last stop of Kreese's redemption tour, he hops aboard Silver's yacht for the duo's final confrontation. Things quickly turn violent, and ultimately, a spilled gas can plus a lit cigar ignites the biggest explosion the Valley has ever seen. R.I.P. to the series' most gruesome twosome!
Carmen
We'd be remiss if we didn't at least mention that Carmen has her baby. She and Johnny name their new daughter Laura as a tribute to his late mother. Before the baby is born, Johnny proposes. "You're the woman of my dreams. You make me a better man," he tells her. She obviously says yes, and they get married right then and there in the hospital. A happy ending, indeed!
