Matt's Inside Line: Scoop On NCIS, Chicago Fire, Heartstopper, It's Always Sunny, The Recruit, NCIS: Origins, Fire Country, Leonardo And More

What does Chicago Fire's Severide really want? Do we spy a return date for The Recruit? Will Ghosts' Sam and Jay meet their UK counterparts? Read on for answers to those questions and others! (You can and should email brand-new Qs to InsideLine@tvline.com.)

Any info on if/when Chicago Fire's Severide will get a promotion? It seems everyone has been promoted, Casey, Herrmann, Stella... everyone except him. –Ari
Simply put, Severide isn't interested in being made captain. "He's got his focus on the thing he is obsessed with, which is arson and OFI, in addition to squad, which he loves," showrunner Andrea Newman explains. "There's a lot of politics the higher you go up in rank, and Severide has no interest in that. He's a get-your-hands-dirty kind of guy. So arson is still very much on the forefront of his mind, the possibilities of moving to OFI are at the forefront of his mind, and all of that comes up. He's dealing with all of that this season."

Since the UK version of Ghosts has ended, are there any thoughts that Alison and Mike could make a visit across the pond to encounter Sam, Jay and their American spirits — not to mention the redcoats in the shed? –Charlie
Regarding the British sitcom's creators who also played ghosts, "At some point, we'd like to have them all on, eventually," says co-showrunner Joe Port. "But as far as [Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe] as Alison and Mike, that sort of doesn't compute for us because it feels kind of strange... It just seems too similar, or something, to Sam and Jay. Like, they live in a house where there's also a pants-less ghost and a guy with an arrow through his neck...."

Six months ago it was announced that a potential New Amsterdam sequel was being developed by David Schulner. Any news about a pilot being ordered by NBC, or is NBC not moving forward with it? –Sophie
Rest assured, New New Amsterdam Newer Amsterdam New Amsterdam: Tomorrow is still in development at NBC.

Anything at all you can tell me about Heartstopper Season 3? —Lina
But of course. Despite her crush on Nick and toxic relationship with Ben in seasons past, "Imogen has her own sort of queer journey to go on" in Season 3, series creator Alice Oseman tells TVLine. "At the end of Season 2, we saw that she and Sahar had this little Heartstopper moment. It wasn't quite clear what that was, but a lot of fans interpreted that as some kind of romantic spark." Was it? Natch, Oseman won't come out and say. But she does allow that in Season 3 (which drops Oct. 3), "we'll follow up on that and see whether it progresses and what it means for Imogen. That's going to be a really fun part of the season."

There's no American Horror Story nor American Horror Stories: Part 2 this year? –Elroy
Nope.

What can you tease about the new Chicago P.D. character, Kiana Cook (played by Warrior Nun's Toya Turner)? Will she be a love interest for Kevin Atwater? –Demar
Showrunner Gwen Sigan describes Kiana as "very cool," "very different" and a "very action-oriented cop" — but none of that action will be with Atwater, at least "not off the bat." That said, "Atwater might get a little romance this season," the EP teases, with "somebody who can see him and can understand who he is."

Got anything on Season 2 of Netflix's The Recruit? –Brendan
Post-production on the last few episodes of Season 2 of Alexi Hawley's spy drama is finishing up now, but the drop date remains very TBD as Netflix hammers out an overall release plan for a slew of strikes-delayed seasons of TV.

Please tell me what happened to Hightown!!! I was waiting to binge watch and then poof, it was gone. Is there some way to watch the last season? –Renae
It appears that Starz "disappeared" the Cape Cod crime drama in late March, a few weeks after its series finale aired. At the moment, it looks like episodes can only be rented or purchased via Prime Video, iTunes and the like.

Any scoop on how Abbott Elementary's Janine and Gregory will handle dating as coworkers? –Deb
In a word, it is poised to be tricky. "As much as [them being together] is great, it's also very dangerous," Tyler James Williams told us with a laugh. "This is a situation where one fight can be very bad. And that's, hopefully, what we'll start to chip away at in [Season] 4" (premiering Oct. 9).

I have a question about NCIS: Origins, which has cast Gibbs' father. On NCIS, they said they had not spoken since Shannon's funeral. Do you know how NCIS: Origins will explain that? –Marc H
Indeed, the prequel series picks up with a young Gibbs joining NIS in 1991 as a probie, not long after wife Shannon and daughter Kelly were tragically killed. Addressing the canonical conundrum you point out, co-showrunner David North told me, "We did solve it. We're very aware of the canon and what's been set up, and we're working within that. But I'll say this: Jackson (to be played by Longmire's Robert Taylor) is an important role, and we'll see the influence of him on Gibbs."

Any scoop on Jake's personal life in Fire Country Season 3 (premiering Oct. 18)? –Adriana
Jake's frenemyship with his and Bode's recently resurfaced, ex-con classmate Rick "will evolve and be layered," says showrunner Tia Napolitano. But only "when the information is absolutely clear" about whether or not Rick is in fact dearly departed Cara's baby daddy, "Gen will get the truth."

Any updates on when the new season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia may air? –Dave
I am hearing that Season 17 of the FX comedy won't hit your screen until 2025.

Leonardo was renewed for a second season, but Season 1 finished airing almost two years ago on The CW and I haven't heard anything else about it. Is Season 2 still happening? –Melissa
I made a lot of phone calls on this one, and while there may have been the perception that the Aidan Turner-led historical drama was renewed more than three years ago — due to some comments made on an Italian radio show by a bullish producer — a second season in fact was never officially ordered, and there are currently no plans for one.

Surface was renewed a few years ago but I have heard nothing on it. –Tony
I asked around for you, but Apple TV+ has no updates on Season 2.

Any notable guest stars early on in NCIS Season 22 that you can tell us about? –Maria
A juicy guest star role will need to be filled for when the team encounters a superspy who has become... less spry. "We've got a fun episode about what happens when a guy like Jason Bourne or James Bond — one of these really serious, high-end people who are involved in espionage — ends up in a retirement home, suffering from the things that all of our parents and grandparents suffer," showrunner Steven D. Binder told me. "What do you do when you have those sort of skills, and that sort of knowledge, and you're starting to lose your s–t?"
