Pre-Holiday News Dump Jitters: Are These 10 Series In Danger Of Getting Cancelled In The Next 24 Hours?
It's a PR tale as old as time: Unload bad news right before a long weekend in the hopes that everyone is too busy racing to the airport or fighting over the last box of Shake 'N Bake at Harris Teeter to notice.
Yep, the phenomenon known as the pre-holiday news dump is upon us.
While bad news can take on many forms in the TV world, many of the less flattering headlines have one thing in common: the word cancellation.
With that in mind, and with Thanksgiving just hours away, we surveyed the small screen's vast renewal landscape and pinpointed 10 possibly vulnerable series, all of which are awaiting word on their fate.
Scroll through the list of bubble shows below and riddle us this in the comments: If you had the power to save one of the 10 series, which one would it be?
American Gigolo (Showtime)
The problem-plagued reboot — which wrapped its troubled first season on Oct. 28 — appears to be a long-shot to return for Season 2.
Big Shot (Disney+)
We can't decide what the bigger red flag is concerning the fate of John Stamos' sports dramedy: The fact that Disney+ deviated from tradition and unloaded Season 2 all at once, or that the decision to even renew the little-watched show for a second season might've contributed to longtime exec Peter Rice's ouster.
Blockbuster (Netflix)
Given the atrocious reviews that greeted the workplace comedy's inaugural season, we'd understand if Netflix wanted the Melissa Fumero-Randall Park vehicle to disappear as quietly as possible.
A League of Their Own (Prime Video)
It's been nearly four long months since Prime Video dropped the eight-episode adaptation of the hit 1992 film. The big question: Is no news in this case good — or bad — news?
Love Life (HBO Max)
It's been a year-plus since the warmly received William Jackson Harper-led second season bowed and the fate of a potential third season remains unknown. However, an HBO Max insider cautions us against reading too much into the silence, citing the fact that Love Life is an anthology series and not beholden to traditional renewal/cancellation timelines.
One of Us Is Lying (Peacock)
Look, it's only been a month since Season 2 dropped, so it's entirely possible that the YA thriller could return for a third season. But given the rate at which Peacock shows are getting dispatched to the dreaded MIA Network, combined with the series' relative lack of buzz, color us a smidge concerned.
The Orville (Hulu)
Back in August, series creator/star Seth MacFarlane put Orville's Season 4 renewal chances at "50-50," though the recent release of all three seasons on Disney+ could move the needle. "My hope is that [via] Disney+, the people who haven't yet discovered [the show] will suddenly give it a chance," he told TVLine at the time. "That's a potential game changer for us."
Tell Me Lies (Hulu)
The drama series — based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Carola Lovering — concluded its well-received first season in late October, so there's no reason to panic. At least not yet.
Uncoupled (Netflix)
Say what you will about Neil Patrick Harris' polarizing rom-com, but the series was not lacking in buzz. And considering that Season 1 (which dropped four months ago) ended on a huge — albeit ridiculously predictable — cliffhanger, we're frankly surprised Netflix is dragging its feet on a pickup.
Vampire Academy (Peacock)
On the plus side, Season 1 ended just three weeks ago so, again, we're miles away from panic territory. On the minus side, given the popular source material — not to mention the Vampire Diaries pedigree (Julie Plec is an EP) — we're surprised the show wasn't more talked about.
