American Idol Top 5 Revealed: Who Did Their Moms Proud On Mother's Day?
We can now count the number of remaining American Idol contestants on a single hand. Per viewers' votes, Sunday's episode sent two more singers packing, finalizing the Top 5 of Season 20.
But before those results were revealed, the remaining hopefuls — Christian Guardino, Fritz Hager, HunterGirl, Jay, Leah Marlene, Nicolina and Noah Thompson — were each given two more chances to sing for America's approval.
The first round of songs were all viral TikTok hits, followed by a second round of Mother's Day tributes. Both Hager and Thompson were diagnosed with COVID-19 and unable to perform live in studio; the show used Hager's rehearsal recordings, while Thompson sang live from the forced comfort of his hotel room.
Read on to find out which five singers are moving on to the next round, and which pair of hopefuls had their Idol journeys cut short. When you're done, drop a comment with your reactions. Were right contestants eliminated? And who do you think will win Season 20?
SAFE: Leah Marlene
Marlene kicked off the night with a high-energy performance of BORNS' "Electric Love." She gave it her all, and as we all know, she's got a lot to give.
She shifted gears considerably in Round 2, performing "Sanctuary" from Nashville, a show she and her mom watched together. (Side note: That show had some jams! Why don't more of them trickle down to Idol?) Anyway, this was soft and beautiful, showcasing a totally different side of this multi-faceted superstar.
She just opens her mouth and magic comes out. I don't know how else to say it.
SAFE: HunterGirl
Tate McRae's "You Broke Me First" was a good song choice, very much in HunterGirl's comfort zone. She has commanded the stage like a winner from Day 1, and this was no exception.
Her second performance, Lauren Alaina's "Like My Mother Does," was also pure joy. Not only was she feeling every lyric in that song, locking eyes with her mother in the audience, but there was such an ease to her voice. Her talent is truly effortless.
SAFE: Nicolina
In Round 1, the self-proclaimed TikTok queen succeeded where every drunk girl at karaoke has failed, crushing Heart's "Alone." Perry was so blown away by the performance, she could barely stay in her chair.
And her follow-up performance of Pentatonix's "Light in the Hallway" was no less incredible, showcasing a different side of her voice. Whereas "Alone" was a total belt-fest, there was a refreshing lightness to her second song. Nicolina truly does contain multitudes.
SAFE: Fritz Hager
A COVID-19 diagnosis kept Hager from performing live on Sunday, but as Luke Bryan said, "Thank God we recorded rehearsals." He treated viewers to another original jam, one that expressed his complicated feelings about growing up. To be fair, he does turn 13 next week.
He kept the magic coming with his second song, an original song he dedicated to his mom and late grandmother. If you had any doubts about Hager belonging in the competition, this surely slapped the wrongness right out of you. The guitar playing, the emotions — it was all there.
SAFE: Noah Thompson
Unfortunately, Thompson didn't have a pre-recorded rehearsal at the ready, so he was forced to perform Sundy Best's "Painted Blue" remotely. Not only was Thompson's voice unaffected by his sickness, but the whole experience felt incredibly intimate. Frankly, singing it without an audience or any other distractions probably benefited him in the long run.
Thompson's second song was a tribute to his grandmother, who became more of a mother to him than his own following his parents' divorce. (Real talk: I got emotional just hearing Thompson tell his grandmother that he was dedicating his performance of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" to her.) The final result, which shockingly came without a guitar, was a solid take on the iconic passage-of-time anthem.
ELIMINATED: Jay
Inspiration can strike when you least expect it — like when you're casually watching animal videos on your phone, for example. That's apparently how Jay came to choose Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" as his first song on Sunday, and thanks to will.i.am suggesting that he take it down a key, the whole thing came together wonderfully.
As for his Mother's Day tribute, I don't think I could have imagined a better choice than Boyz II Men's "A Song For Mama." It was perfectly in his pocket. To all the mothers out there, you're welcome. As Lionel Richie put it, Jay is "finally stepping into his own," and it's wonderful to see.
Sadly, that's all we'll get to see, as he was one of the two sent packing.
ELIMINATED: Christian Guardino
Guardino's confidence has been growing steadily during these live shows, and holy effing moly, was it out in full force this week. His bombastic performance of Justin Bieber's "Lonely," arranged to fit his unique vocal stylings, put the original song to shame. He remains the kind of guy you just can't help but root for.
As for Smokie Norful's "Dear God," not only was it a powerful way to close the night, but damn, what an incredible pick. He was feeling the whole thing — every word, every run, every note. And it was hard not to feel all of that coming right through the TV.
Unfortunately, the voters weren't feeling it as much as I was. But hey, at least Guardino has that duet with Michael Bublé to look forward to.
