TV's Scene Stealers Of 2018
amma-sharp-objects-scene-stealers-2018
Amma, Sharp Objects
As soon as Amma Crellin roller skated into frame, you just couldn't help but watch her every move. Portrayed by the spellbinding Eliza Scanlen, the Sharp Objects teen kept us guessing until the very end, shapeshifting from sultry small-town rebel to doe-eyed mama's girl with alarming ease.
Chapter Thirty-Five: Brave New World
Cheryl, Riverdale
Every time Riverdale's redheaded vixen enters a scene, it's like a cherry bomb just went off. Her snarky putdowns and general fabulousness make her a teenage queen bee you can't take your eyes off of — but we also know there's a tender heart beating underneath all those designer clothes.
"Younger" Ep. 509 (Airs 8/07/18)
Diana, Younger
From her romantic exploits on Staten Island to her musical debut in Germany, Diana's life was just as eventful — if not more so — than Liza's in Season 5, and we loved every minute of it. (Plus, there's no such thing as too much Miriam Shor.)
elektra-pose-scene-stealers-2018
Elektra, Pose
Whether earning well-deserved 10s on the ballroom floor, or standing her ground and undergoing reassignment surgery, Dominique Jackson's larger-than-life character commands our attention at every turn.
frieda-oitnb-scene-stealers-2018
Frieda, Orange Is the New Black
It's tough to stand out in OITNB's cast of thousands, but this frog-voiced old coot has become one of our favorite Litchfield inmates. Tough as nails and blunt as a homemade shiv, Frieda tells it like it is and isn't afraid to draw blood. And yet we still love her... she's like the foul-mouthed convict grandma we never had.
ROME FLYNN
Gabriel, How to Get Away With Murder
Annalise Keating has taught hundreds of students, but none so immediately captivating as Middleton newbie Gabriel Maddox. From his passionate stance on criminal justice reform to his inscrutable connection to Annalise, the super-charismatic Gabriel has quickly become one of Murder's most compelling characters.
hormone-monstress-big-mouth-scene-stealers-2018
Hormone Monstress, Big Mouth
Not everyone is able to see Maya Rudolph's curvaceous character, but when we're fortunate enough for her to appear on screen, she's all we can look at. #BubbleBath
jared-silicon-valley-scene-stealers-2018
Jared, Silicon Valley
Pied Piper's gawky CFO is a reliable source of unsettlingly strange one-liners ("Adversity is a great teacher. Just like cigarette burns."), and his undying loyalty to Richard is endearing, if a little creepy. Plus, he surprised absolutely no one this year by falling in love... with a female android.
The Good Place - Season 3
Jason, The Good Place
Bortles! No one on heaven or earth makes us laugh as much as Jacksonville's dopiest DJ. He's good for at least a couple of brain-dead observations each week, and we appreciate his sweet soul, too. Can you blame Janet for having such a huge crush on him?
jonathan-van-ness-queer-eye-scene-stealers-2018
Jonathan Van Ness, Queer Eye
Not that we're looking to break up the band, but if Netflix were to give any of the Fab Five a spinoff, we assume it would go to Jonathan Van Ness, henny!
JORDAN
Jordan, The Bachelorette
Most of the "villains" on ABC's long-running reality series overstay their welcome. But Jordan Kimball broke the mold — and believe us, he knew it — by crafting an on-screen persona that was so hilariously smug, we couldn't help but be entertained by his frequent, self-congratulatory monologues.
kelli-insecure-scene-stealers-2018
Kelli, Insecure
If you're wondering what a perfect marriage of droll writing and master class-level comedic timing looks like, allow us to introduce you to Natasha Rothwell's acerbic superhero.
mark-forever-scene-stealers-2018
Mark, Forever
The elder statesman of the community to which Oscar and June relocate, the comedic beauty of Mark is that he'll show the tiiiiiniest hint of growth/maturity... but typically falls short. Instead, he can be counted on to call out the newcomers on their loser status (or to sheepishly pine for the high school classmate he deemed untouchable).
Death Keeps Knocking On My Door
MG, Legacies
From his self-deprecating humor to his unexpectedly killer dance moves, we're totally falling for the nerdy vampire with a personality as big as his hair. More MG please!
Chapter Eighty
Rogelio, Jane the Virgin
Jane's telenovela star dad has mellowed a bit in recent seasons, but his fits of A-list actor egomania are still a weekly highlight. (He takes his craft very seriously... which you can tell by his use of the word "craft.") Why isn't the upcoming Jane spinoff about him, dammit?
604-No Blacks No Dogs No Irish
Sandy, Ray Donovan
Mickey's wackadoodle sister-in-law, played with unhinged abandon by It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Sandy Martin, has been the breath of fresh comedic air the increasingly dour Showtime drama so desperately needed.
susie-marvelous-mrs-maisel-scene-stealers-2018
Susie, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
It speaks volumes of Emmy winner Alex Borstein's formidable acting powers that Midge's Tasmanian devil of a manager can draw belly laughs just by silently walking into a scene carrying a toilet plunger.
Into the Forest I Go
Tilly, Star Trek: Discovery
The Discovery's tongue-tied ensign brings a healthy dose of comic relief to the bridge with her awkward fumbling in just about every social situation — and seeing her tap into her badass side in the mirror universe was a treat, too. But most of all, we love Tilly's wide-eyed wonder at all the sci-fi wizardry on display. (We'd be that awestruck, too.)
tracy-atlanta-scene-stealers-2018
Tracy, Atlanta
Al's couch-surfing ex-con pal was a dynamite addition to Season 2, getting Earn and company into and out of trouble with his fast-talking bravado. He might cause more problems than he solves, but he also backs up his friends with muscle when it's called for. Let's hope he's still on Al's couch when Season 3 comes around.
yaphit-the-orville-scene-stealers-2018
Yaphit, The Orville
Mixed into the alien crew member's gelatinous form is a surprising amount of game — and certainly enough to coax the estimable Dr. Claire Finn to boldly go where few human women have gone before, euphorically moaning all the way.
Trial & Error: Lady, Killer - Season 2
Anne, Trial & Error
Of all the colorful characters in East Peck, S.C., airheaded secretary Anne Flatch delivered the most laughs. Kudos to Sherri Shepherd for fully committing to her character's endless list of medical conditions (including the riotous sight gag in which Anne painted eyes... on her eyes.)
Blindspot - Season 3
Rich Dotcom, Blindspot
Working for the FBI is serious business — unless you have Rich Dotcom on your team. The expert hacker has brought some much-needed levity to NBC's procedural drama, armed with enough one-liners and pop culture references to make even Kurt Weller crack a smile. (Well, sometimes.)
evie-ahs-apocalypse-scene-stealers-2018
Evie, American Horror Story: Apocalypse
Join us, won't you, in raising a glass — burnt champagne, natch — to the one Joan Collins character that's ever come close to rivaling her iconic Alexis Carrington for both glamour and quotability. Evie was such a hoot, she made doomsday seem less like the end of the world than a to-die-for party.
granma-preacher-scene-stealers-2018
Gran'ma, Preacher
"Hell on wheels" took on a whole new meaning the second Betty Buckley rolled into Season 3. Even when she wasn't uttering a syllable as the soul-sucking Madame L'Angelle, she exuded such malevolence that we had no doubt the villainess was a scarier piece of work than the devil to whom she'd sold her soul.
ms-wardwell-sabrina-scene-stealers-2018
Ms. Wardwell, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
From the moment the teenage witch's teacher became possessed by Madame Satan in the Netflix thriller, Michelle Gomez showed us a helluva good time, chewing scenery like she was at an all-you-can-eat buffet and using every inch of her lithe frame to suggest that her native tongue is body language.
