Switched At Birth Boss On Bay And Daphne's New Boys, 'Interesting' Toby Arc And More

MAX ADLER, VANESSA MARANO

New Guy #1

"Carlton is not up to par for Bay, so she takes a college [art] class and she meets Tank (played by Glee's Max Adler). He's a college freshman, and they become friends. And it's a different kind of relationship than we have ever seen with Bay and a guy.

They both really change each other. He does start off as a little bit of a frat boy, the class clown, always joking around. But there is such a heart of gold in there. She's amused by him, but her feelings for him ebb and flow as the episodes go by."

SEAN BERDY

Bay and Emmett

"They are always each other's first person to go to, to talk through things. A lot of us have had friends like that — the guy friend who maybe was an ex who you still feel that emotional intimacy with, and they know you better than anyone, so you can talk through a lot of stuff.

So that's fun to watch as they try to really have a friendship and see if they can make that work, truly this time, because last time they tried, she was at Carlton and she was feeling over her head and she was barely keeping up in school. ... A truly intimate friendship is fun to watch. And then, [there is the] possibility for other things as we move further along in the season."

RJ MITTE, KATIE LECLERC

New Guy #2

"[Daphne] has 100 hours to do at this clinic in the terms of her probation, and that changes her profoundly this season. So you'll meet a whole group of new people, like RJ Mitte (Breaking Bad) , at the clinic as she starts off thinking, 'I just want to check off the hours,' and then comes to a different place with this.

RJ Mitte plays a college student who is also interning at the clinic, and he's paralyzed. We really wanted to explore two disabled characters in very different ways and who have very different relationship to their disability. That really excited us to really pick people and see how they connect or don't connect based on that."

LUCAS GRABEEL

Toby

"Toby has a really interesting arc. He goes through a lot this season in terms of figuring out who he is, and it's not an easy road for him. He has images of all his friends at freshman dorms, at all of these colleges having a blast, and he is not living that life. He has to come to terms with the choices he's made and figure out if he's on the path that he has to be on."

LEA THOMPSON, ALEC MAPA

Kathryn and John

"Kathryn is very much aware of the specter of her girls leaving [for college] in nine months and what that's going to mean for her. It's a big fear for her. She's been a full-time mom. It's been her identity for 18 or 19 years. So she meets this new friend, Renzo (played by Ugly Betty's Alec Mapa), in the [season] premiere, and he changes her a lot. They go through some stuff together. She breaks out. She goes on a little bit of a midlife crisis. She decides she wants to figure out who she wants to be in this next stage of her life when the girls leave the house.

John is, to use a political term, a bit of a lame duck. The politics didn't go so well for him, and he needs to figure out what his next role is going to be."

CONSTANCE MARIE

Regina and Angelo

"Something happens that shuffles the cards for [Regina] in terms of her job and her future. And she gets to explore this season a whole different side of her that's very exciting and scary.

Angelo is a new dad to baby Abby and trying to balance doing that and a business venture that he got into last season with a woman he met at the country club. Angelo with money is never a safe bet. So there's some rocky road ahead for him too.

For now, [Regina and Angelo are] together and married and trying to make that work."

Carlton

"The sign Carlton School for the Deaf has been stripped off. It's now Carlton School, which is a big difference for [the characters]. The deaf kids feel very weary of what this new world's going to be where ASL is not the primary language. So that's a big deal for us..for both parts of the season."
