New Year's Eve 2020: Countdown Moments

By the time that Steve Harvey referred to Jenna Dewan as "Gina Dewan," we were just about ready to put 2019 to bed.

TVLine took stock of the many New Year's Eve countdowns to 2020, which began a full four hours (!) before the ball dropped in Times Square. Suffice it to say, things got real weird — real fast.

Take, for instance, former NFL tight end Rob Gronkowski throwing oversized pretzels at people on a Slip 'N Slide, or CNN's Richard Quest making his grand debut as Rum Tum Tugger from the box office flop Cats. Then there was Maria Menounos, who attempted to liven up Fox's NYE bash by dispersing free alcohol and contraceptives, while NBC's Stephen "tWitch" Boss handed out what looked to be... a basket of random garbage.

As always, ABC's Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve proved to be the most competently produced special of all. In addition to a trip down memory lane for Ryan Seacrest and a former American Juniors contestant-turned-cohost, there was Pose star Billy Porter, who livened things up down in the Big Easy.

Then Maria Menounos offered everyone in Times Square free booze and condoms, because why not!

Over on Fox, Rob Gronkowski threw a giant pretzel at someone trying to get up a Slip 'N Slide...

Then Steve Harvey filled in for Jennifer Love Hewitt on 9-1-1 — and it did not go well. 

Then Maria Menounos challenged the regular people to gift wrap each other while she stood under a giant umbrella...

Move over, Adele Dazeem! Steve Harvey just referred to Flirty Dancing's Jenna Dewan as "Gina Dewan."

Then we turned back to CNN and had zero context for this conversation.

Over on CNN, journalist Richard Quest made his debut dressed as Cats' Rum Tum Tugger. Because everyone loved Cats!

Then Randi Kaye made her entrance...

... and ordered a sizeable cocktail.

Then we switched back over to Fox, and Gronk was throwing giant yoga balls at some poor souls carrying dead fish.

Over on NBC, Julianne Hough's earmuffs were giving the Times Square Ball a run for its money as the true star of the show...

... and Stephen "tWitch" Boss offered the person who traveled the farthest a basket of garbage. 

The category is: Hosting excellence. Billy Porter was a breath of fresh air whenever Rockin' Eve cut to the Pose star, live from New Orleans.

Over on ABC, Ryan Seacrest and Lucy Hale reminisced about the short-lived American Idol spinoff American Juniors, on which Hale placed fourth. (Try to name those who came in third, second and first. We dare you!)

A little later, 50 Cent was all of us watching CNN's NYE show...

Then Cohen went and accidentally referred to 50 Cent as "Shaq." (Oof.)

Then Anderson Cooper took a shot...

Over on Fox, The Village People (with an assist from Maria Menounos) attempted to set a world record for the largest "YMCA" dance...

... and Steve Harvey told a group of young women wearing diapers that he wished he was wearing a diaper, too — and that was just about enough of Steve Harvey for this decade, thankyouverymuch.
