We’re certain that How to Get Away With Murder will reveal the identity of Asher’s killer before the final season ends… but that won’t stop us from speculating wildly in the meantime! In the photo gallery below, we’ve ranked Asher’s potential murderers from least to most likely — and our rankings could change as Murder approaches its series finale. Scroll down to see our current theories, then tell us your own!

With five Murder episodes to go, we’re not ruling anyone out just yet… but we’re still hard-pressed to believe that Tegan had anything to do with Asher’s untimely demise. Sure, Tegan’s got some skeletons in her closet — and we’re not yet convinced that she didn’t poison Emmett Crawford on the night he died — but there’s (currently) not enough reason to suspect her in this case.

The FBI might be convinced that Annalise is a villain, but in truth, she’s never actually killed anyone on this show — and we have a hard time believing her first victim would be a student she mentored for years. As for the logistics, they don’t really work: Annalise was having a major fight with Nate on the night Asher died, and then she flew to Mexico to start her new life as Justine. (We just can’t see her squeezing in a quick murder before catching that flight.)

Similarly, Nate was tied up at Annalise’s on the night in question, so it would seem obvious that he wasn’t involved with Asher’s murder. That said, Nate does have a history of doing bad things when he’s angry (i.e. beating Miller within an inch of his life), and it’s not clear where Nate went after he left Annalise’s place. Still, we can’t come up with a strong enough motive that would prompt Nate to kill Asher; in fact, he’d probably be proud that Asher was trying to take down Annalise by working with the FBI.

For now, we’re lumping this trio together, since they were all (seemingly) in the same location on the night Asher died — and as of Murder‘s spring premiere, we’re taking their apparent innocence at face value. That’s not to say it’s totally impossible that Connor, Michaela and/or Oliver killed Asher in the end; we suppose one or more of them could have snuck away to Asher’s place before the sun rose on graduation morning. But when you consider their shock at getting arrested, and a total lack of “we just killed our close friend” freakouts, it seems very unlikely that any of these three actually committed the crime.

Laurel’s sleazy brother is used as a scapegoat so often that we tend to dismiss him as an actual suspect. But perhaps we should take an Occam’s razor approach to Asher’s death: Since Xavier seems like the most obvious culprit, maybe it’s him, after all? (On the other hand, we’ve barely even seen Xavier this season, and we’re sorta hoping a more familiar face was responsible for the death of a major character.)

LIZA WEIL

Fragile as she might seem, Bonnie has already killed two people on this show, and that alone puts her higher on this list. What’s more, Bonnie had a shockingly muted reaction to the news that Asher had died; she might just need time to process, but given her romantic history with Asher, it’s odd that she wasn’t more emotional, no? And then there’s the obvious motive, since Asher wanted Bonnie to incriminate herself while he secretly recorded her on his phone.
Still, even though she’s killed in the past, Bonnie has been through it this season, from the car accident that nearly ended her life to the devastating revelation that Miller was innocent. Given her recent trauma, we just can’t see her working up the strength — physically or emotionally! — to take another life.

CHARLIE WEBER

The show certainly wants us to think that Frank was responsible for Asher’s death: In every flashback from the April 2 episode, Frank seemed more and more wary of Asher’s actions, and we know he was in Asher’s apartment building that night. (Plus, let’s face it: Of all the people on this list, Frank is the most capable of killing someone, covering his tracks well and keeping his guilt to a minimum.) But even though Frank is the most obvious option, that’s the exact reason we don’t think he murdered Asher. Surely the show wouldn’t spell it out with five episodes left, right?

ROME FLYNN

As of the midseason premiere, our money is on Gabriel Maddox. It’s been established that he and Asher interacted just before Asher died — and though it might seem that Gabriel merely traded his cell phone for $64,000 and called it a night, there’s still some missing time we need filled in, and we’re not convinced that Gabriel closed the door on Asher so soon. (Perhaps Asher discovered Gabriel’s phone recording of Frank, and they had a confrontation?)
Gabriel also looked mighty guilty while reading about Asher’s death the next day — while still holding onto that check, no less! — and we haven’t forgotten that he’s got some kind of alliance with Agent Lanford, which is never a good sign.
