Ranking Doctor Who's Modern Companions

DWCompanions_Mickey_DW

9. THE COMPANION | Mickey Smith

Actor | Noel Clarke

WHY HE ROCKS | He may have tagged along through time and space because of his feelings for Rose, but it would be his love for his grandmother that would lead him off the TARDIS to remain in an alternate universe. As Mickey went on to fight the Cybermen, before returning to help face the Daleks, he proved that even a short stint with the Doctor can bring out a person's best self.

8. THE COMPANION | Captain Jack Harkness

Actor | John Barrowman

WHY HE ROCKS | What isn't there to love about an omnisexual con-man-turned-hero who goes on to work for Torchwood? Captain Jack gave his life up for the Doctor once — and you know he would do so again and again and again...

DWCompanions_Rory_DW

7. THE COMPANION | Rory Williams

Actor | Arthur Darvill

WHY HE ROCKS | So many deaths over the course of one life! But there wasn't anything Mr. "Pond" wouldn't do for his wife (AKA The Doctor's primary pal Amy Pond): follow her to the edges of time and space, wait centuries to see her again and even punch the Doctor.

DWCompanions_Clara_DW

6. THE COMPANION | Clara Oswald

Actor | Jenna Coleman

WHY SHE ROCKS | The "Impossible Girl" is only a season in to her tenure as the Doctor's companion. Nevertheless, her existence across multiple incarnations throughout the Doctor's timeline — the result of her own noble sacrifice — means she could easily move up this countdown in time. She's already earned the TARDIS' respect and saved the Doctor's life, and (as Oswin) was converted into a Dalek (!). Now, she's the second companion to usher in a newly regenerated Time Lord.

DWCompanions_Martha_DW

5. THE COMPANION | Martha

Actor | Freema Agyeman

WHY SHE ROCKS | An actual doctor herself, Martha stuck by our titular hero — even when he objected. During her time as a companion she walked the Earth to defeat the Master and save the 10th Doctor's life. She's also the only long-term companion that chose to leave the Doctor's side.

DWCompanions_River_DW

4. THE COMPANION | River Song

Actor | Alex Kingston

WHY SHE ROCKS | The Doctor's "wife," River was there for him through the good times (defending the universe against everything from the Daleks to Hitler) and bad (holding off the weeping angels so he could mourn her parents' deaths), ultimately giving up her life for his. Actually since then — or rather, before that — she's given up any future lives by using all her remaining regenerations to bring back the good Doc.

DWCompanions_Amy_DW

3. THE COMPANION | Amy Pond

Actor | Karen Gillan

WHY SHE ROCKS | The "Girl Who Waited" proved that companions can have lives outside of the TARDIS, as she went on to get married and have a successful career, while still going on adventures throughout time and space.

DWCompanions_Rose_DW

2. THE COMPANION | Rose Tyler

Actor | Billie Piper

WHY SHE ROCKS | The first companion to kick off the rebooted series in 2005, Rose won our hearts and the Doctor's (both of them) when she showed us that companions can grow and evolve, learning as much about herself as she did the universe. Not to mention, she looked into the heart of the TARDIS.

DWCompanions_Donna_DW

1. THE COMPANION | Donna Noble

Actor | Catherine Tate

WHY SHE ROCKS | Of all the modern companions, Donna definitely came closest to being the Doctor's equal. Not only did she support him when he needed it, but she was unafraid to stand up to the centuries-old Time Lord when she thought he was doing something wrong — as only a best friend would. And she played vital roles in seminal episodes including "Turn Left," "Silence in the Library," and the two-parter "End of Time."
