cynthia-erivo-the-outsider
CYNTHIA ERIVO, THE OUTSIDER
WHY SHE DESERVES A NOD: HBO's chilling Stephen King adaptation dealt with a supernatural, shape-shifting monster — and yet, not even El Coco was as fascinatingly mysterious as Erivo's Holly Gibney. Throughout the show's 10 episodes, Erivo dared us to see past the "eccentric" label that Holly's male colleagues so often slapped on her; with her magnetic performance, the actress crafted a character who was also confident, brilliant and downright heroic.
hong-chau-homecoming
HONG CHAU, HOMECOMING
WHY SHE DESERVES A NOD: As corporate exec Audrey on Amazon's twist-laden thriller, Chau was the emotional anchor of Season 2, crafting an intricate portrait of ambition gone wrong. Audrey schemed her way up the Geist executive ladder, but Chau also showed us the crippling self-doubt and anxiety she had to overcome, along with the sweet affection she had for Janelle Monae's Alex that motivated her to succeed. Her grand plans fell apart in the end, thanks to an unfortunate memory wipe — but we won't forget Chau's performance anytime soon.
indya-moore-pose
INDYA MOORE, POSE
WHY THEY DESERVE A NOD: Billy Porter gets all the buzz, and rightfully so, but Moore delivered Pose's most compelling Season 2 performance as the street-smart Angel. Our hearts swelled as Angel worked up the courage to pursue a mainstream modeling career... and then our hearts were shattered when the industry cruelly slammed the door in her face. Moore imbued every scene with a wrenching fragility, and all the setbacks just made Angel's eventual triumphs all the sweeter.
OZARK
JULIA GARNER, OZARK
WHY SHE DESERVES A NOD: After winning in this category last year for her portrayal of criminally fierce spitfire Ruth Langmore, Garner easily could've just rested on her laurels in the Netflix drama's third season. Instead, she used Ruth's ill-fated romance with Tom Pelphrey's Ben as an opportunity to expose vulnerable new layers of her hardened alter ego.
rhea-seehorn-better-call-saul
RHEA SEEHORN, BETTER CALL SAUL
WHY SHE DESERVES A NOD: Because it's long overdue, dammit. As hyper-competent attorney Kim Wexler, Seehorn has been Saul's stealth MVP for years now — but in Season 5, there was nothing stealthy about her. Seehorn was fantastic as Kim doubled down on her commitment to Jimmy and embraced her dark side... albeit with her trademark precision intact. (Her flawless verbal takedown of drug lord Lalo Salamanca was an Emmy reel if we've ever seen one.) Thus far, the Emmys have ignored Seehorn, but this year, with this performance? She's simply undeniable.
sarah-snook-succession
SARAH SNOOK, SUCCESSION
WHY SHE DESERVES A NOD: It's hard to root for any member of the Roy family, but we have a soft spot for the snarky, savvy Shiv — maybe because Snook's performance is so damn good. In Season 2, Logan tapped Shiv to take over as Waystar's CEO, and Snook added a newfound boldness and confidence to Shiv's personality. (The merciless insults kept flying, though, of course.) Plus, as Shiv scrambled to defuse a looming scandal, Snook showed us the depths she would stoop to in order to preserve the family business... and her place in it.
Unknown Caller
YVONNE STRAHOVSKI, THE HANDMAID'S TALE
WHY SHE DESERVES A NOD: Because she was on freakin' fire — at one point, almost literally — in Season 3. How does she do it? How does Strahovski get us to empathize with Serena in one episode (the anguish she conveyed while holding Baby Nichole at the airport!) and hate her in another (the icy hatred she leveled at June at the Lincoln Memorial!)? Throw in the way she navigated that shocking cross and Serena's just desserts at the end of the season, and how could you not give this force of nature recognition for such stellar work?
