Emmys 2019: Supporting Actor, Comedy — Dream Nominees

ANDREW SCOTT, FLEABAG
WHY HE DESERVES A NOD: We have a confession to make: We can understand why Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag would lust after the Catholic priest Scott played in Season 2. Scott was thoroughly charming as the laidback, earnestly devout clergyman who turned Fleabag's head — and actually got her to reconsider her deeply cynical worldview. (He even noticed when she was talking to us!) Scott delivered a refreshingly positive portrayal of spiritual faith... and he looked pretty good in those vestments, too.

ANTHONY CARRIGAN, BARRY
WHY HE DESERVES A NOD: We still love you, Henry Winkler, but our favorite Barry supporting turn this year came straight out of North Hollywood (by way of Chechnya). Carrigan was a certified scene-stealer as eternally upbeat mobster NoHo Hank, always making us giggle with his goofy one-liners and infectious zest for life. (He's really better suited to be a luxury hotel concierge than a gangster, as he admitted.) Barry can get awfully dark at times, so we're thankful that Carrigan is always there to lighten the mood.

MARC MARON, GLOW
WHY HE DESERVES A NOD: Season 2 gave Maron more latitude to show the soft center underneath Sam's gruff exterior, and the wrestling comedy was better for it. We especially loved watching his choices as Sam realized how much he'd come to care for teen daughter Justine, and we were blown away by the subtle, gradual way the actor communicated Sam's realization that he was falling for Ruth. It's fitting that GLOW is heading to Vegas in Season 3: Heading into Emmy season, we like Maron's odds as a standout.

MARK PROKSCH, WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS
WHY HE DESERVES A NOD: Having seen the cult film on which this FX comedy was based, we were ready to meet foppish bloodsuckers. Colin Robinson, though... he has been a wonderful surprise. As an "energy vampire" who passes himself off as the prattling coworker from hell, Proksch delights us with his masterful droning. But when he lets slip a glimpse of his glowing, feeding-frenzied eyes — or engages in a turf war with emotional vampire Evie — Proksch gives his role that hysterical added... bite.

NOAH REID, SCHITT'S CREEK
WHY HE DESERVES A NOD: For starters, some recognition is overdue; when Reid joined the cast in Season 3, he stole our hearts even faster than Patrick stole David's. And Season 5 was his best yet. Proving again that he's more than an adorable button face, he nailed bits both comedic (Patrick and Alexis' awkward kiss) and dramatic (his character's fraught coming-out), and slayed Cabaret's "Willkommen" to boot. Throw in Patrick's heartfelt proposal, and yes! Of course, Reid's among our Dream Emmy nominees!
The Good Place - Season 3
WILLIAM JACKSON HARPER, THE GOOD PLACE
WHY HE DESERVES A NOD: Has an existential crisis ever been so much fun to watch? As Chidi's worldview completely fell apart in Season 3, Harper turned in his best comedic work of the series; we're happy to remind Emmy voters of that Episode 4 chili scene, if they need further proof. But Harper also mined new emotional depths as Chidi and Eleanor faced fresh crises in the afterlife. Somewhere along the way, Harper's anxious, indecisive character became the show's chill voice of reason — and thanks to the actor's performance, the transformation was nothing short of heavenly.
timothy-simons-veep-dream-emmys-2019
TIMOTHY SIMONS, VEEP
WHY HE DESERVES A NOD: Simons has always been Veep's secret weapon, somehow making it enjoyable to watch a crass jerk like Jonah insult his way through Washington. He was equally sensational in the comedy's final season, infusing Jonah with just the right amount of manic ambition as he attempted to win the presidency. Whether Jonah was cursing out his stepfather on television or completely botching his media training, Simons was as committed as ever. He'd sure get our vote, even if Jonah wouldn't.
