Modern Family has only been off the air for four months, but ABC is already staging a Dunphy reunion.
Sarah Hyland is set to star in Yours, Mine & Paul’s, a comedy in development at ABC that counts Hyland’s Modern Family dad, Ty Burrell, among its executive producers.
Per our sister site Deadline, the multi-camera project follows Hyland’s “impulsive, faux-enlightened millennial” Lauren, who agrees to be a surrogate for her best friend, Paul, and his husband, Xander. But Lauren and Xander hate each other… and Paul dies in the cold open.
Lauren is further described as someone who likes the idea of being the center of attention for nine months during her pregnancy, without having to take care of a crying baby at the end of it. But after Paul’s unexpected death, “she is confronted with the looming possibility of motherhood and co-parenting with her nemesis.”
Hyland is coming off an 11-season run as Haley Dunphy on Modern Family (with Burrell as Haley’s dad, Phil), which aired its series finale in April. Her TV credits also include stints on Veronica Mars, Shadowhunters and ABC’s 2017 remake of Dirty Dancing.

I like the sound of this plot. I’ll be tuned in!
I like the basic premise, but that death in the cold open will be hard to get around. I think the best option is to make Hyland and Paul the sort of stereotypically “bad” type of millennial (think Search Party characters), while Xander is more of a bro-y type of guy. This will be hard casting because it can’t be a situation wherein Xander and Hyland’s character will fall in love. This will have to be a “Will and Grace” scenario wherein the fans have to accept that Xander won’t magically become straight. I’d guess that Xander will have either a brother or a coworker/best friend who is Hyland’s ultimate love interest. With a future partner for Xander to be introduced at a later date.
That early death is the sticky wicket here. He will have to be pretty annoying, immediately, for the audience to be OK with his death. This will be hard to pull off. After that tough open, I could see the show working.
He doesn’t have to be annoying… or else why would Hyland’s character like him and agree to be the surrogate? But you do have to kill him quick. You can’t have him around the entire pilot for people to really get attached to him.
Again, sort of like Search Party characters. I can see why they like each other, but how they would be annoying to be around if you weren’t their friend/have a lot in common with them.
.
If she’s the stereotypical self obsessed millennial, it is easy to see how she would be BFFs with a similarly self obsessed gay male millennial. Much like Will and Grace, they’d be co-dependent, self obsessed/selfish, but very caring and considerate of each other. No romantic entanglements, no competition over romantic partners (past the odd is he gay or straight argument [I’ll bet they have different tastes in male partners to further zero this out]), no competition over who is more attractive, none of that. If the guy is too nice and likeable, we the audience won’t like that he’s dead, and that will kill the show.
.
Frankly, they’d be smarter to kill him off without every showing him on screen. I’d do the entire first act from his POV, with us only ever hearing Xander and Hyland’s character speak vis a vis reactions to whatever the POV has just said, only we never hear it said. Then shift perspectives to the post funeral services, say, 1-2 weeks after, and GO.
Sounds like a good MOVIE plot than a TV series plot.
I would watch this. Sounds much better than a Cam & Mitch spinoff.
First of all, this is not a spin-off. Secondly, let’s hope it is far better than the absolutely horrendous and insulting “United We Fail” that ABC is currently airing.
You have trouble reading? Nowhere did the person say this project is a spinoff.
Sounds promising. I’ll definitely give it a try.
This sounds like a Will & Grace type comedy that just segways into the plot differently. Does sound interesting however so I’ll check out the pilot at least.
I like Hyland, but I’m not sure how they’re going to wring comedy out of surrogate custody drama. The deadline article states that her character will also be the egg donor so I don’t know how they’re going to “haha” their way all the things that have to occur to make anything other than Xander being a single father a possibility.
That may be a little too hard on the show. I just hope for the sake of every parent regardless of sexuality that has to conceive through surrogacy/egg or sperm donation that this show doesn’t spread misinformation for the sake of plot convenience. The premise assumes some form of egg donor/surrogate custody is going to possibly be an option and that involves court actions on her part or legal negligence on Paul/Xander’s.
I fell in love with Sarah throughout Family’s run and imo she evolved into such a great comedy actress…will watch anything she’s on.
I don’t know…these type of forced odd couple raising a child shows have not been too good in recent memory. More of a wait and see.
Sounds good AND DIFFERENT! ABC comes up with interesting and clever story lines. I look forward to this one.
