Here’s hoping Roseanne likes the sound of the word “Grandma.”
ABC’s forthcoming Roseanne revival has hired its first new cast member to join returning vets Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Michael Fishman, Lecy Goranson and Sarah Chalke. TVLine has learned exclusively that newcomer Ames McNamara has been tapped for the series-regular role of Mark, Darlene and David’s 8-year-old son. The casting breakdown for the character describes Mark thusly: “Sensitive and bright, Mark occasionally likes to wear girls’ clothing.”
The kid’s name is, of course, an homage to late actor Glenn Quinn, who played David’s older brother (also named Mark) on the original series. Quinn died in 2002.
In a statement to TVLine, McNamara’s TV mom (and revival EP) Gilbert said, “It’s inspiring to see so much talent at such a young age. Some people are born with abilities beyond their years. Ames is one of those people.”
Casting continues for Darlene and David’s daughter, now-14-year-old Harris (who was first introduced to viewers in Season 9’s 19th episode, when Darlene delivered the baby very prematurely).
McNamara’s hiring comes as efforts continue to lure his TV dad, Big Bang Theory‘s Johnny Galecki, back to his former sitcom as a guest-star. “We are in productive talks and are hopeful it will work out,” Gilbert tells TVLine.
At the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour last month, ABC president Channing Dungey assured Roseanne fans that the revival will harken back to the show’s Emmy-winning heyday. “We’ve now heard the broad strokes of the creative for these eight episodes,” she said, “and feel very confident that it is going to be a return to the show everyone knew and loved.”
ABC’s eight-episode Roseanne revival is slated to air in early 2018.
I haven’t enjoyed any comedies in years but I’m looking forward to this one.
Personally, I wish they would stop bringing these old shows back. It would be nice if they could come up with some new and creative ideas.
The way I see it, the only reason we’re getting all these reboots, is because no one has come up with new creative ideas in years :-D
There are lots of creative ideas out there, along with creative writers. The problem is that since Broadcast TV is losing eyeballs (and writers) to the more creatively open cable networks, the Broadcast nets (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC) are grabbing at straws to get viewers back, and (in their eyes) the best and most instantaneous way to do that is to reboot old classics, hoping the droves of people who watched back in their original runs return with them. Because, after all, if these Broadcast execs take a chance on something ambitious and new from an unknown writer and it fails, they’re out of a job they spent years trying to get. But to take a chance on a reboot and have it fail is a job security blanket as they can deem it a “limited run revival” and not get pink slipped because “How could it fail? It had the entire original cast.” so the blame falls elsewhere.
Perhaps I should of said that there are no networks willing to take the risk on the small amount of NEW creative ideas that are out there :-)
It’s only 8 episodes… not like it’s returning for 9 more seasons
They do air new and creative shows. The problem is that people don’t watch them! ABC just aired two seasons of The Real O’Neals, a hilarious show, and it barely got any viewers. It was incredibly underrated. If you want to see new and/or creative shows, they’re out there, you just need to look.
Ugh. The Real O’Neals is a terrible example for the point you want to prove. I wanted so much to like that show, because, Martha Plimpton. But it was just awful. I was absolutely shocked that it even got a second season.
After decades of new things, originality, at least original things that networks believe have a chance at success, aren’t as easy to come by as many people would like. Fortunately there are some examples of fairly original things that not only exist, but do so successfully.
I agree but I think considering the world we live in this one is oddly appropriate.
I do not mean this to say I want them to deal with politics. I do not. I just think checking in with the Connors at this point in time gives me chills. I want to see what has become of them…ignoring season 9 which it looks like they’re doing. I feel like not doing this is a crime against television.
Just change the channel…… IDIOT!!!
Wow… they’re still casting parts? Shouldn’t tapings have already started on this?
Midseason.
I follow Michael Fishman on Instagram. On one of his posts, I saw someone asked him when the filming of Roseanne starts and he answered: “in October”. :)
I saw Sara on TV say she asked the cast to be available October and November for filming
Should they have a 20 year old?
Will they recast mark or have becky rasing there children alone
My guess is that they’re going to say he died. That would explain why this new kid is named Mark, after him. The only question is how. I would guess if they say it’ll either be the military, or they’ll actually go with drugs.
Why is Harris only going to be 14? She was born in 1997…..
It’s in the same universe in which Dan is still alive ……
how did “Mark” die? (Glenn Quinn)
He OD’d on heroin.
If the show does really well in the ratings, could / would they order additional episodes?
Not interested in this white supremacist woman’s show. I wish they had Valerie’d her out and revived with the rest of the exceptional cast.
Um, what?
My thought exactly.. umm!!! what???
Nobody is forcing you to watch Roseanne! Why don’t you go with what you are comfortable with… Tyler Perry’s shows where he will not cast but almost all black cast. When he does cast a white person.. he makes sure that they play a dumby!! But when Tyler Perry does that… He’s not being RACIST??? Roseanne is as far from a white supremacists show. In fact, the black people that were casted in the past.. they were quite smart and weren’t made to act as dumbies!
White people aren’t allowed to say anything racist only people who are not white…
Exactly! That’s obvious!!! If we organizations that were just for the white… We would have riots! But you don’t see us rioting over their organizations!!!!
If we had organizations…
(Correction of my comment above)
We don’t have to… They all do just fine killing off their own kind but I can’t go to college on a discount.. Who’s the minority now?
Well, this escalated quickly.
Yeah, lots of “dumbies” “casted” about.
Lol!!!! I guess I missed the episode where they all wore white sheets and set a cross on fire.
Shouldn’t Harris be at least 20?
What about Becky’s Husband Mark?!? Are you going to have it to where Mark dies on the show or are you going to get a new cast member in place of Mark?! God bless Mark… May he Rest In Peace! God bless his family. Please cast the original Becky more and Sarah Chalke only a little. Cause The Original Becky… She’s the REAL DEAL!! And what about Dan?! Please don’t make his character dead on the series. Thank you.
You need to catch up! https://tvline.com/tag/roseanne/
What about Becky’s baby that she was pregnant with in 1997?! Her baby should be 13 if Harris is 14. My husband and I absolutely love Roseanne!!!! We watch EVERY SINGLE EPISODE on LAFF TV! Roseanne is the only series besides King Of Queens that we can watch over and over and NOT GET BORED!!! We are major fans of The Roseanne show and the cast. Thank you for bringing it back! By the way, where can we buy the full series of Roseanne?! I’ve found partial series on the internet.?.
Agreed.. i like everyone loves Raymond also.
Where has it been indicated that it actually takes place in present day.
If they are ignoring Dan’s death, they can set it in any year.
I thought Dan Connor had died on the show.

They must bring back old shows, they were the best. I only watch the old shows no interest in what is on TV now.
I’m confused. In the last episode, when she talks about Dan’s death, and that they actually did not win the lotto, she says that she switched the couples.
The actual couples were: Darlene & Mark, and Becky & David.
She also said that it was Jackie that was gay, not the mom. So I wonder if that’ll be switched too.
If Dan’s alive, and Darlene is with David, will they say that her whole monolgue was false? Maybe they did win the lotto?
A smidge of illumination: https://tvline.com/2017/08/06/roseanne-revival-dan-death-season-10-fate/
I thought when Darlene and David had their baby on the series that it was a baby girl?
Read the story.
Let me guess… “Dan, I just had the weirdest dream….”
I happy to here roseanne back on tv
Any info on Roseanne’s other son, Jerry? I know large parts of the last season are being left out, but I can’t remember, was that baby a part of the “forgotten season” as well?
He was born during season 8.
I really enjoyed it on the. 90’s with my kids who growngrg
David and Darlene’s daughter was born on the show in 1997 making her 20, not 14.
That will not be her age in revival.
This show is filled with dried up actors, who see this reboot of their old jokes, told to a new and old set of ears, as hope for a big paycheck. The only great actor in this lot, is John Goodman. They must have payed him a lot, to act with this crew. Within this show, is a cast member, who will play as Mark, a 9 year old boy/girl gender, yet genetically a male. He is going to play Roseanne’s grandchild. Then, I heard that this show will have the 9 year old child go to school and the mall, while wearing a dress and walking in pumps. I guess that ABC is glad to see a child’s life placed in front of billions of people, and the recording of these events that will take place before he is an adult. It is seen that a child has less understanding of life and will power, than both the legal guardians and ABC, who are after money and a political statement. I don’t want to see any pain and suffering, to be inflicted upon this child. Just let him be a kid, and act in the way that he wants, in a safe manner. I ask that ABC and the legal guardians not force their will power and beliefs, to the point of molding this boy into what they want to see and hear. Let, this child walk his own path in life, while being given aid to be on that path. Please; don’t force PG-13 and above information on this 9 year old child’s life.
Somebody needs a hug.
Ok but it doesn’t take away what Rosanne said in the last episode about how her family really was and how dan and darleens baby died and that everything was just her making up the last season. How am I supposed to forget that?
your comments are all wrong, Dan is darlene’s father. Darlene’s baby, Harris lives and will be 14 yrs old in the sow and much like lil Darlene’s was as a kid. Dan and Roseanne faked Dan’s death for a wild reason, I wont tell ya! Yes Roseann’s book from last season, was a book she wrote, that was a fictional story based loosely on the Connors life. Since her publisher wanted her book to be more exciting. When we see her reminiscing in the last scene, it was her thinking about what it would have been like, if the fictional storey had been real
We all know Sarah Chalke will be playing D.J.’s wife on Roseanne 2 ! no big mystery
I heard that David and Darlene will be divorced thus explaining David’s abscence, but it would be great if he would make an occasional appearance. I think this reboot will be a huge success
