Chicago Fire: Jesse Spencer Set to Return for Season 10 Finale, During ‘Critical Time’ for Casey and Brett
It’s official: Matt Casey is headed back to the Windy City for a very special occasion. Jesse Spencer — who exited Chicago Fire last October — will reprise his role in the NBC drama’s upcoming Season 10 finale (airing May 25 at 9/8c), TVLine has learned.
“We pretty much begged him, pleaded and offered him the moon so that he would come back and do the finale. But he’s the greatest and he was in even before we started all of that,” co-showrunner Derek Haas tells TVLine. “The character pledged he would be best man at Severide’s wedding. We’re so grateful to [Jesse] that he would come back and honor that pledge.”
Casey’s return also comes at a “critical time in his relationship with [girlfriend] Brett,” who is currently visiting her beau in Oregon, co-showrunner Andrea Newman previews. When the firefighter reappears, viewers will “see a Casey who is in a very happy and content place in terms of [his] life [in Oregon], and the big question mark is his relationship with Brett.”
Filming on the season finale has yet to begin, “but I can tell you that everybody is dying to see Jesse. I am dying to see Jesse,” Newman says. “It’s going to be a very beautiful thing on the set to see that face up here. We’re all excited about it. I’m going to cry, I’ll tell you that.”
Spencer departed the series in the 200th episode, when his character Casey decided to move to Oregon to take care of his late best friend Andy Darden’s sons. Since then, he has continued to have an off-screen, long-distance relationship with Sylvie Brett (who took an extended leave from her job to spend time with her boyfriend).
Spencer had starred on the firefighter drama since its 2012 debut and was one of six remaining series regulars from the first season. At the time of his exit, the actor explained, “I realized I’ve been doing TV for a long time. I added it up, and I think this year is my 18th year of network television [between Fire and House]… It was a difficult decision because I’ve loved the show from the start, but there are other things that I would like to do in the future, and there’s some family that I need to take care of, and 18 years is a long time.”
Spencer also hinted that the goodbye episode would probably not be the last that viewers saw of Casey. “There is the potential for me to come back. I still am in Chicago right now. I’m not running off to Los Angeles or anything, although I might escape for a little bit of the winter,” he shared with a laugh. “My home here with my wife is in Chicago, and so I’m still going to be here, but I’m just stepping back for right now.”

I have been hooked on Chicago Fire for a while now. And I LOVE IT 💘 ❤! It’s one of my routines in the day. I can’t get enough og Casey & Severide’s relationship as BEST FRIENDS or their brothershood in the show. They such INCREDIBLE ACTORS need i say for the whole cast.. They all COMPLEMENT each other. That’s what I LOVE ABOUT THE SHOW!!
This is almost anti-climactic.
I know they’re in a tough position with Jesse Spencer not being on the show but it would be a real shame to break up Casey and Brett after so much build up. I hope they get to keep going long distance and Sylvie gets some stuff to do that isn’t about who she’s dating.
Totally agree with you Ryanna. I love the whole team on Chicago fire. I hope they don’t take Casey off the show and if he feels like he needs to go I hope they can find someone as close to Casey’s personality as possible.
Looking forward to his return even though it’s only for one episode. Maybe Brett will go back to Oregon with him !! That would be a happy ending for them. But, I don’t think she will !!
I don’t think she will leave. She and Mouch have too much invested in the emergency home visit program. I like seeing her doing some th thing more than worrying about the man in her life and seeing Mouch character develop.
We have seen that one program maybe one time since Casey left. Brett has been sidelined, except for Casey-related stories.
Show runners have said Kara will be back as Sylvie next season
Showrunners consistently lie about cast exits. Haas straight-up lied about Otis dying and denied Spencer was leaving to start with. They are not going to announce a major cast departure before it happens and, with the exception of Monica Raymund (because they were in denial), never have.

Very excited to hear that Jesse will be back for the season finale. It is only right for Casey to come back to be the best man for Severide. Should be a great episode.
I couldn’t agree with you more, that it’s only fitting that Jesse Spencer returns for the wedding. It would have been a shame if he didn’t come back considering his history with the Severide character and devotion to his fans who miss him very much. Maybe he can come back occasionally if they are planning on continuing the relationship with Brett. I really miss the brotherhood between Severide and Casey
I would like to see Jesse Spencer return at some point I think Brett should become pregnant with Matt’s baby and kidd should have Kelly’s baby at the same time these shows never let anyone have a baby but Hermann they always have them miscarry I really hope Matt comes back and brings the boy’s who become firefighters like the dad.

Very glad Jesse is returning for the finale’. It will be great to see him in action again. And what better time….Severide’s wedding. Maybe Jesse will return off-and-on to Chic Fire. As for Brett, I hope she stays with Chic Fire.

Same. Kara has been on the show for eight years and just lost her female lead status to Miranda Rae Mayo (even if not officially). She has had nothing to do since Jesse Spencer left. It would make a lot more sense for Brett to decide she’s happier in Oregon and decide to move there, especially since this article makes it sound like Casey is way happier there than in Chicago. I’m going to lose it if Brett and Casey split and Casey ends up with Gabby.
Kara never had the female lead status so she didn’t lose anything. Once Monica left that spot was open and Miranda was slowly shifted into that role because Kidd was easily the best character for it. Brett was always an underwhelming character.
Kara Killmer has third/fourth billing. Miranda is seventh/eighth. Your feelings are not facts.

I love them together. Think as far as TV relationships go, it’s realistic & comes across as if they really love & support each other.
Don’t like Casey he was a real jerk after he made Capt. I hope this is about Kelly and Stella and not about Casey and Brett. We viewers deserve a great show like promised and if we don’t get it, I for one will be gone. I think this show needs better writers, the ones they have are stuck in a rut and we get the same thing year after year

I stopped watching CF because I cannot stand the actress who plays Stella plus Gabby’s baby/adoption drama as well. Ugh.
Don’t keep Brett and Casey together she done been with everyone on fire. Beside Gabby was her bestie and it’s making her look bad don’t like it. And she dated Antonio Gabby’s brother .
She dated Cruz in season 3, then Casey in season 9. Antonio was never a series regular on Fire. So, unless I missed the episodes where Brett dated Boden, Severide, Herrmann, Mouch, Otis, Mills, Borrelli, Chili, Kidd, Gabby, Foster, Mackie, Gallo, and Ritter, she has not “done been with everyone on fire.” But nice try, or whatever.
And Brett wasn’t gay so she didn’t date any women.
Well, Barb appears to think that Brett has slept with everyone on the show, which would include women. Maybe the writers will get there some day.
I hope Jesse come back to the show permanently. I miss him on the show.

I am so happy to see Jesse back for the finale. I just wish he could come back as a series regular next season but I will be happy to get some new Brettsey scenes. I just hope we get some Casey and Severide scenes as well.
To be honest I miss Matt Casey and Sylvie Brett together romantically and I hope that they stay together romantically not break them up. They’re relationship between them has been build up please don’t break them up again like you’ve done before by trying to get other romance for them. I hope that Sylvie Brett moves away with Matt Casey. I don’t like Emma at all it’s like she’s the Erika Kane of Chicago Fire or something.

Great to have him back even if its only one episode…just do not let Severide marry “whats her name” Her character is boring and they are not suited to each other. Sure makes for an uninteresting season next year. You picked the worse person to pair him with!

I’m happy to see Jesse & Matt Casey back for the finale. Just leave Brettsey alone. We waited for three seasons for these two to be together. Don’t break them up. They can make it work.
I KNOW JESSE AS HIS OWN LIFE TO LEAD, BUT MISS YOU ON CHICAGO FIRE. HAVENT REALLY WATCHED IT MUCH SINCE CASEY LEFT, REALLY GLAD HES COMIG BACK, CANT WAIT. CASEY AND BRETT ARE GREAT TOGETHER DONT SPLIT THEM UP, FAMILY AND LOVE IS WHAT THEY BOTH WANT.
