The end of Cal U doesn’t have to mean the end of grown-ish, as Freeform has renewed the black-ish spinoff for Season 5.
Speaking of black-ish, Marcus Scribner — who has co-starred as Johnson sibling Andre Jr., aka Junior, on all eight seasons of the mothership series — will join grown-ish‘s cast for Season 5 “as he embarks on his own journey to being ‘grown,'” per Freeform’s official announcement. (black-ish‘s series finale airs this spring on ABC.)
As for changes happening behind the camera, Season 4 showrunner Julie Bean is exiting the series, as is executive producer Jenifer Rice-Genzuk Henry. Courtney Lilly, who currently serves as black-ish‘s showrunner, and Zakiyyah Alexander (La Brea, Hunters) will take over as co-showrunners for Season 5.
grown-ish‘s renewal comes less than three weeks ahead of its Season 4 finale, scheduled to air Thursday, March 24 at 10/9c. In the show’s fourth season, Yara Shahidi’s Zoey and her friends have been preparing for their graduation from the California University of Liberal Arts. The ensemble also includes Trevor Jackson as Aaron, Francia Raisa as Ana, Emily Arlook as Nomi, Jordan Buhat as Vivek, Luka Sabbat as Luca and Chloe and Halle Bailey as Jazz and Sky Forster.
TVLine’s Cable Renewal Scorecard has been updated with grown-ish‘s Season 5 pickup. What do you think of Scribner joining the show?
He’s good but I would rather have Marsai Martin (Diane) join instead. She is my fave!
Sounds good to me
I really don’t get where this show goes, next season. How are they supposed to keep all of these characters in their respective orbits? And haven’t we already been exploring Andre’s journey to adulthood on Black-ish?
I wonder if ushering Junior in is to replace Zoey? The trailer did show she had an offer from Luca to move to New York or an offer from Aaron to move to South Africa, right? Assuming she takes either of them up on their offer, is one Johnson coming aboard because the other is leaving, leading to a major cast shake-up? Probably not lol, but I do think the post-college era should have some new life breathed into it.
I think we should leave Zoey and her friends and have a spin-off with Junior and Olivia.
I figured Junior would land at Grown ish full time. Year 5 should be a new class as most should be graduating or taking graduate classes for masters, etc.
I was hoping the show would end after this season. I enjoy it but I feel as if it’s getting a bit stale. And Junior is my least favorite of the Black-ish characters so I’m not looking forward to this.
Completely agree. I feel like it makes sense for grownish to end since blackish is as well and Zoey should be graduating. Junior is okay in small doses only.
Diane should be the one leaping to grown-ish. She’s 17 IRL, so it’s not too far-fetched to do a tiny time jump and let her begin freshman year. Junior is fine but it’s bizarre when he’s been out of school so long to go back in, it feels a bit “Joey” spinoff now to me.
I’m with you on all your comment. I would watch Diane be a riot at a college. Junior has no backbone to try to hold my attention.
I don’t agree. I think everyone grows at their own pace. Junior just had his heartbroken where is his life going. He was right to go back to school He needs to have fun, mess up in order to grow up I think it will be a good show. And hopefully we will get to see all the Johnson kids attend Cal U
Maybe the 6th season will be a Grown-ish: The New Class a la the OG Saved by the Bell reboot, but with Diane and Jack leading the college crew.
I’m gonna miss blackish so much it should not be taken off the air. I think that is something that we need in this DNH a show like blackish and Grown-ish.

I’m surprised that this show will outlive Black-ish. Season 4 looked like it would be a good ending point, assuming Zoey and the others will graduate in the finale. A mostly new cast led by Junior would be a good way to freshen things up, but I guess it would be possible for the show to keep the original cast and follow their post-college lives.
They could always take the A Different World approach. Through a few people in grad school. The show is grownish not schoolies . We could still follow their young adult lives. Maybe make some people become student teachers or advisors. I agree with those that would love to see Marsa in this show.
I would prefer Diane. Let’s have Diane at MIT or Harvard.
I would love seeing Jack and Diane more than Jr. Let time pass and have them show up as the new twins of the show! Jr., is already being Grown-ish why would he go back to school?
I will miss the cast I love the show Grownish I don’t want no one to leave 😓😓
Love that he’s joining the cast. He’s my favorite on Blackish.
