Presumably, Grey’s Anatomy intended for us to spend the summer worrying that Kim Raver was going to be killed off. In the last moments of the Season 19 finale Thursday — read the full recap here — her Teddy Altman collapsed before beginning what was supposed to be life-saving surgery on Sam Sutton (guest star Sam Page).
But shortly before the two-parter kicked off, our sister site Deadline revealed the results of the cast’s Season 20 contract negotiations, and guess what: Raver has re-upped. So we no longer have to fret that Teddy’s spouse Owen Hunt will be unsuccessful in his efforts to resuscitate her and left to raise Leo and Allison alone.
In addition to Raver, Kevin McKidd, who has played Owen since Season 5, Camilla Luddington, who first scrubbed in as Jo Wilson in Season 9, and Private Practice vet Caterina Scorsone, who made her first Grey’s Anatomy appearance as Amelia Shepherd back in Season 7, have also signed on the dotted line.
Thankfully, so have the show’s two remaining OGs, Chandra Wilson, aka Miranda Bailey, and James Pickens Jr., whose recovering alcoholic Richard Webber ended the season with — ruh-roh — a vodka tonic in hand.
At this point, there has been no word as to how involved in Season 20 Ellen Pompeo will be as Meredith Grey. But since the leading lady remains an executive producer — and her character just challenged the traditional approach to curing Alzheimer’s disease — it’s a safe bet that she will pop up again. And again. And… you get the idea.
Are you annoyed that Grey’s Anatomy’s cliffhanger was spoiled? Or did you never really believe that Teddy was a goner in the first place? Hit the comments with your reactions.
Not annoyed, I figured she was coming back.
I knew Teddy’s apparent exit was too good to be true.
I can go to bed a little easier now knowing this, but I’m still f***ing mad
Relieved, especially since it may take some extra time to get the new season + Chief Teddy has been awesome.
Seems like a blessing the cast renewals spoil the outcome now that we have to wait till January for more episodes.
Wow I was like what, but I’m waiting for season 20
After the 2nd complaint about the toothache, that was enough foreshadowing for me. I initially thought, “Are they really going to kill her off?” Maybe I’m the only one thinking this??? Just because Kim is coming back, that doesn’t mean she will be coming back with her character alive. It could be her coming back as a ghost and/or her character in flashbacks…Just saying :-) It’s definitely not an original idea.
I feel like they’ve announced contract renewals even for characters that wound up dying. Or, they lasted for a few episodes of the next season but ultimately died, like Sloan.
Correct – contract just means Kim Raver is agreeing to be there, not that the show commits to her staying the entire season. This doesn’t require the show to keep her on. They still have the ability to kill her off, etc.
I would not be surprised though if she’d die and stuck around as a ghost or Owen’s allucinations
This show should have ended 7 seasons ago, i stopped watching it after the demise of Jackson/April I couldn’t take it anymore.
Good for you…us over here are still watching
So.. if you don’t watch it anymore why are you giving your opinion on something that you don’t watch. Let other people enjoy this show.
So why still reading about it?
The problem isn’t the show long run, it’s the insistence to keep some characters that’s the writingto them hasn’t been great or difficult and they don’t know what to do with them. and No, I’m not talking about owen character. I quite like him.
I thought Teddy was having a heart attach not aToothache. I’ve seen this before.
It happened to Niles Crane
Glad to hear that Teddy will be back and also that we don’t have to wait for the flip side of the writer’s strike to find out.
Two words: Patrick. Dempsey
I was hoping that Scott Speedman had re-signed. Nick was the best new character the show had in a long time, unfortunately sacrificed for Meredith.
Meredith needs to stay away. The show is better without her.
I’m not a fan of the Teddy or Amelia chacters.I think the only character they could legitimately turned the job of running the hospital over to is Addison with Meredith commuting with her often.
So glad Maggie left, can’t stand Amelia or Jo either. I keep watching this show because it’s just habit I guess. Been watching since 2005. This show.needs to end with the little dignity it has left. Every episode is soooo predictable and corny now. I’ve literally skipped over some characters interactions because I really don’t care about them.
Relieved. Never know how a show is going to end. Never know if contracts are reupped or actor wants out.
On another note. I hope they keep Nick and he and Meredith stay together. Glad Wilson finally got her head on straight and told Linc I love you. ❤👍
I’m so glad they spoiled it because after watching the season finales of L&O: SVU/OC and Station 19 I wouldn’t have been able to handle Teddy being gone.
I hope Ellen doesn’t show up much. With the attitude she has had, whining about having to stay on the show longer than she should, has really turned me off watching her storyline. Love everyone else on the show love love love.
My reaction, is that I’m sad she’s reupped! I’ve never ever been able to stand her character!! Get Owen with someone interesting & fun!!
Finger crossed they finally kill Catherine and Meredith can be the new Catherine and marry Richard, therefore realising her mother’s dream and opening the portal to Hell.
Was hoping she wasn’t a goner glad to know she isn’t. I think the show has gotten better since its not all about Meredith anymore. Its like it was when it first started
In what capacity did she re-sign her contract? She could pop up in flashbacks all season or be an apparition for Owen. I really believe them giving us the contract info was to intentionally make us comfortable. I lowkey hope she doesn’t die from a bad tooth though.
She could come back as a ghost that haunts Owen and his guilt over the mistakes he made in their marriage.
Didn’t the literally end last season with a Teddy/Owen death cliffhanger? Ugh, let’s almost kill off some new people.
No, they didn’t. They did a cliffhanger mid-season last year that left Owen in danger; Teddy had already exited the car, she wasn’t in any danger.
