Overcompensating's Wally Baram Shares Her Journey From Writer To Star, Pitches Carmen's Redemption In Season 2 — TVLine's Women To Watch

If you're still reeling from the Season 1 finale of Prime Video's Overcompensating, don't worry, Wally Baram is here to tee up a much-needed redemption arc for our Carmen. (The series hasn't been renewed for Season 2 yet, but can't a couple of girls dream?)

To start, perhaps the entire mess Carmen created by outing Benny and kissing his crush wasn't even her fault! As Baram explains, if you rewatch the scene, you'll see it was Miles who kissed Carmen, not the other way around. Ultimately, Baram thinks everything could eventually be smoothed over by the power of Nicki Minaj's "Superbass."

But whether or not you felt betrayed by Carmen, one thing is certain: Baram's performance in Overcompensating has catapulted her into stardom. She was consistently laugh-out-loud funny, whether she was coaching her bestie Benny on how to be gay, or navigating a bathroom emergency at a Charli XCX concert. Baram also brought a sweet tenderness to her character, who accepts her friend for who he is — despite his shortcomings — adding some much-needed depth to a series that could've easily veered too far into parody.

Though this is our first time seeing Baram on screen, she's had experience as a writer for shows such as Shrinking and What We Do in the Shadows, and says she admires multi-hyphenate creators/actors such as Lena Dunham, Issa Rae and Ali Wong.

All of this makes Baram a no-brainer for TVLine to name as one of our inaugural Women to Watch. Our new awards series recognizes women doing exciting, inspiring and industry-shaping work in television. The honorees are selected by the TVLine staff; Baram is this year's Comedy Star to Watch.

We've already unveiled our Drama Star to Watch, and we'll reveal the awardees in Daytime Star to Watch, Reality Star to Watch and Showrunner to Watch as the week continues. Full video interviews will be posted here on TVLine.com, with bonus content rolling out on our social channels (Instagram, TikTok and YouTube).

In the video at the top of this post, Baram chats with TVLine editor Claire Franken. In their conversation, Baram talks the steep learning curve in taking on her first acting role, her chemistry with costar Benito Skinner, Overcompensating's emotionally "brutal" Episode 6 scene and more!
