Grey's Anatomy Blindsides Kwan With A Blast From The Past — Who's Back?
It may not be Thanksgiving yet, but that isn't stopping "Grey's Anatomy" from serving up a (potentially uncomfortable) family reunion.
Kwan is riding high after Thursday's episode, during which he not only helps Bailey reach a challenging diagnosis for one of the hospital's VIP patients, but he also earns Webber's approval to resume regular operating duties. Unfortunately, Kwan isn't given the time to celebrate either of these victories; as he's leaving Grey Sloan Memorial for the night, he's approached by a well-dressed stranger. Well, he's a stranger to us, but Kwan recognizes him immediately: "...Dad?"
At this point, "Grey's" hasn't revealed much information about Kwan's life outside of the hospital. We know that he helped pay his late mother's hospital bills when she battled a terminal illness, but his dad remains a question mark — until now, that is. Kwan's father is being played by Russell Wong, and as far as we're concerned, it's perfect casting. Wong even has a background in dance like Harry Shum Jr., who's currently killing it on "Dancing With the Stars."
The fact that Kwan was saddled with his mother's medical bills, and that he doesn't look entirely thrilled upon seeing his father, makes us think they have a difficult relationship to sort out. This is "Grey's," after all. Do any parents and children have healthy dynamics around here?
Elsewhere on Grey's Anatomy Season 23, Episode 4...
- Jules and Winston are so back on. After losing a patient, Jules confronts her ex/boss, who gave her some helpful career advice earlier in the episode. "When you go out of your way to help me, it's confusing," she tells him, suggesting that if they really want to keep their distance, they need to commit to it. But the only thing Winston wants to commit to... is Jules. "I'm not fine," he says, stopping her from leaving his office with a big ol' kiss.
- Lucas makes several attempts to check on Simone this week, but she brushes him off at every turn. She eventually confirms that she recently went through something, even if she isn't ready to tell him what that was just yet. She also offers to let him move in with her, which feels... ill-advised.
- Jo finally ends an episode of "Grey's" on a happy note after spending some time with a fellow struggling mother. They discuss their shared traumas, and Jo admits that the sound of the monitor in her hospital room haunts her everywhere she goes, which is the main reason she's unable to return to medicine. Jo and her new friend exchange numbers for future contact, and she leaves the hospital with Link. And a smile.
- Toni surprises Amelia with a weekend getaway, but doing so requires her to clear Amelia's schedule without asking — and she doesn't appreciate that. Fortunately, it doesn't create too big of a bump in the road for them; they talk things through at the end of the episode, and Amelia admits that she's excited for some alone time with Toni. She does, however, insist on getting a full rundown of the weekend's itinerary. (Spoiler alert: It doesn't involve leaving the room.)
