Matlock's Skye P. Marshall Tells All About Olympia's New Love Interest (Played By Her Real-Life Husband)

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Thursday's "Matlock."

"Matlock" is adding a fresh romantic complication for Olympia... and he should look pretty familiar to her portrayer Skye P. Marshall.

At first, we thought this week's episode was setting up fellow attorney Remy as a new love interest for Olympia, and she even agreed to meet him for drinks. But then she locked eyes with Remy's cousin Langston — played by Marshall's real-life husband Edwin Hodge — and Olympia swooned as she shook hands with Langston for the first time. (She even went a little weak in the knees, just like she joked about with Julian earlier in the episode.)

We will be seeing more of Langston, with Hodge returning next week as well, so what is it about him that catches Olympia's eye? "What makes Langston special is exactly what makes Edwin Hodge special," Marshall tells TVLine with a laugh. "He is captivating. His smile does make me weak in my knees."

In fact, "Matlock" showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman even played a role in bringing these two together in the first place, Marshall reveals: "She was there when I met Edwin at the network test at CBS for 'Good Sam.'" (Marshall and Hodge co-starred with Sophia Bush and Jason Isaacs on that short-lived medical drama, which Urman executive-produced.) "She was there during those beginning stages. And Jennie sees everything. You can't get anything past her."

Hodge was already a Matlock fan

Edwin Hodge — best known for his role in "The Purge" films — may just be joining the "Matlock" cast, but he's been studying the show for a while, Skye P. Marshall confirms: "He has been watching every episode of 'Matlock,' and he loves this show. He's obsessed with my character. He helps me run my lines. So he very much knew Olympia through and through, but I did not know who this Langston was gonna be, and he did not share. He held it close to the chest. I even snuck into his fitting! That's how opinionated I was."

But when she did first see him on set as Langston, Marshall was just as weak-kneed as Olympia, she recalls: "When he came around that corner, honey, I was just like, 'There he goes.' It was very reminiscent to when I first started dating him, and what a luxury to be able to have that. He made his voice deeper. He was making deep eye contact. I was like, 'OK, calm down. We're already married.'"

Is Olympia ready to date, though?

We haven't really seen Olympia dip her toe into the dating pool on "Matlock" yet: She still works alongside her ex-husband Julian, she has two kids at home, and she's dedicated to her very demanding job. So does she even have time for romance right now? "A working woman is constantly shaping space for her ambition and for her intimacy to coexist," Skye P. Marshall points out, "and that takes intention... honoring your career without abandoning your personal life."

But "as long as she can be a great mom and a great co-parent," she adds, "I feel [it] would be a really beautiful exploration" for Olympia to see where things go with Langston, "because right now, it's just flirting, but that's innocent." With "Matlock" already renewed for a third season, though, Marshall thinks the door is open for Hodge to return and for things to get serious between Olympia and Langston: "He really shined, and I'm excited and hopeful that they bring him back."
