The trailer for Hulu’s Shrill begins with Aidy Bryant timidly asking a pharmacist for the morning-after pill. But it ends with Bryant’s character confidently cursing out her friend with benefits and confronting an online troll.
So, yeah, this girl goes on a serious journey in the span of two-and-a-half minutes.
Shrill stars Bryant (Saturday Night Live) as Annie, an overweight young woman who wants to change her life, but not her body. While trying to start her career as a writer, Annie juggles bad boyfriends, a sick parent and a perfectionist boss.
As seen in the trailer above, Annie seems destined to live a passive life forever — until she attends a body-positive pool party, writes a blog post about her experience and briefly gains Internet fame, prompting her to take control of her own existence.
“I feel very powerful right now,” Annie beams in the teaser, later admitting that she’s let people “dismiss me or say s—t to me my entire life.”
