Apocalypse, whew.
After sweating it out on the bubble for months, Will Forte’s modestly rated End of Days comedy Last Man on Earth has been renewed for a fourth season at Fox, TVLine has confirmed.
The pickup ensures that Last Man will not end its run on a cliffhanger, or as Forte called it, “The worst last episode of a show ever.” Quick refresh: Last Sunday’s Season 3 finale concluded with Kristen Wiig’s Pamela showing up amid a nuclear meltdown and whacking gun-toting lunatic Pat (Mark Boone Junior).
Forte foreshadowed the Season 4 renewal in an interview last week, telling TVLine, “The latest is that there might be some hope. I was feeling kind of pessimistic a few weeks ago and now I feel like, ‘Oh, we might have a shot.’ I got together with [Fox CEOs] Dana [Walden] and Gary [Newman] and told them what we wanted to do in Season 4; we had a really nice lunch. I understand the position that they’re in. We have [unspectacular] ratings. I think they like the show creatively, but they have to run a business. So I just told them how I thought we could improve the show for us on the creative level.”
Forte cheered the news on social media late Wednesday:

With Last Man in the safe column, all eyes will be on fellow Fox bubble comedies New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
