With a can of pop, Kendall Jenner soothes vague, non-existent tensions at a rally for somethingoranother in a Pepsi commercial that evoked confusion (and some outrage) as it bubbled across the Internet on Tuesday.
In the two-and-a-half minute “short film” (as the soda company labels it), Jenner is seen doing her modeling thing while a super-congenial rally in favor of “peace” and “join[ing] the conversation” ambles down the telegenic street beside her. Eventually, Jenner rips off her wig, wipes clean her makeup and grabs a can of Pepsi, which she then offers to one of the police officers who have been tasked with keeping things down to a small tweet.
As the lawman sips, Jenner lets loose with a fist pump. The cop then smiles to a colleague, as if to say, “Brah, Kardashian’s half-sister just gave me a soda” — all while “Lions” by Skip “Grandson of Bob” Marley swells in the background and the perfectly diverse crowd cheers triumphant.
What, is their rally in favor of “diabetes”?
Among other knocks, the spot’s crescendo has been taken to task for co-opting the iconic photo of Black Lives Matter protester Ieshia Evans getting arrested in Baton Rouge, as well as turning the idea of important protests into a conglomerate-shilling, trendy photo op.
Pepsi describes the video as a “short film about the moments when we decide to let go, choose to act, follow our passion and nothing holds us back. Capturing the spirit and actions of those people that jump in to every moment and featuring multiple lives, stories and emotional connections that show passion, joy, unbound and uninhibited moments. No matter the occasion, big or small, these are the moments that make us feel alive.”
