Star Trek Discovery Sonequa Martin Green Character

Star Trek: Discovery Reveals Name, Rank of Sonequa Martin-Green's Role

Attention on deck! When The Walking Dead‘s Sonequa Martin-Green makes her Star Trek: Discovery debut later this year, she’ll do so as First Officer Michael Burnham.

The sci-fi franchise’s newest series announced the news Monday via its Twitter account:

In August, Bryan Fuller — who was then showrunner of the series but has since stepped down — told reporters that the new Trek lead would be a female “lieutenant commander — with caveats.” Martin-Green was cast in December.

The Discovery cast also includes James Frain (True Blood) as Spock’s father Sarek, Maulik Pancholy (30 Rock) as Dr. Nambue, Jason Isaacs (The OA) as Capt. Lorca and Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) as captain of the Shenzhou.

The new Trek series originally was supposed to launch in early 2017, but has since been pushed back twice. Discovery now is slated to launch “sometime [in] late summer, early fall,” CBS chairman Les Moonves recently told investors.

[Spoiler Alert] Martin-Green recently exited The Walking Deadsacrificed herself in Sunday’s Season 7 finale; her character, Sasha, .

  1. Brian says:

Michael is such a common name for main characters they are giving it women now.

    • MrMank says:

I’ve known numerous women with the name.

      • Pedro says:

Some parents just don’t care. They want to be edge and unique, attention all to themselves and put little thought into the actual child being named. “Let’s name her Apple Diamond. We are going to be the trendiest parents”.

    • Dave H says:

I’m inclined to agree with you. I have never met a female Micheal before, I do find it quite strange. I can’t really see it being a gender equality thing because they’re not really proving anything by making everyone ask why they gave her a male name. There’s a female version of Michael with Michaela already, why change what works?

  2. Lauren says:

She was so funny on New Girl. I hope she finds time to do more comedy.

  3. Justice says:

Stupid name. Fuller and writers are going overboard with trying to use this show to promote transgender and gay rights issues.

    • Pedro says:

Most gay people don’t want to change genders or have an opposite-gender name. So, don’t lump those groups together.

    • :-) says:

Giving girls boys names has been going on for years. Happens a lot in the south. They often give women 2 guys names. Why assign meaning or agenda until we see the show and understand what’s going on? Sometimes it pays not to insert your own agenda into everything. No one is out to get you.

    • Billy Bob Johnson says:

Brian Fuller is no longer involved with the show.

  4. The Watcher says:

Seems like they’re going with a non-traditonal way for spelling “Michelle” but If that’s not the case, I’d much rather they go with Michaela (Ma-KAY-La) over Michael.(MY-KEL)

But that’s just my 2 cents.

  5. Joe says:

It’s set a couple of centuries from now, when presumably we’re all over this nonsense of what to name our kids. At least I hope so; in Gene Roddenberry’s original vision we solved darned near everything else.

  6. Grimsby1 says:

Cant wait for those Romulains to get “Rhonda’d”

  7. K Muck says:

Shocking! The African-American women who was supposed to be the star of Star Trek: Discovery has been demoted to First Officer and a white man is the new star.

Hollywood, get off your white man high horse and come into the real world.

No longer interested in ST:D. Oh well, I guess I can cancel CBS All Access, now.

    • Leah says:

They haven’t changed anything, She is still the main character, not the captain.

    • liame says:

She’s still the star and main character. Her title will most likely upgrade, hang in there.

Calm yourself down and read more than the first three lines of the article. Man people get upset too quickly these days. Get the facts before forming and sharing opinions please.
