It was an evening of hellos and goodbyes on Friday’s Drag Race, as the identity of the mystery queen was Ru-vealed — while another contestant was forced to sashay away.
Let’s start with the big hello: As many people (apparently) speculated, the 14th contestant of Season 9 is… Cynthia Lee Fontaine! The queen of all things “cucu,” who was eliminated in the third episode of Season 8, is back. And even better, her liver cancer is in remission!
With Cynthia now in the fold, Ru announced this week’s challenge: the “biggest, baddest cheer battle in herstory,” with Cynthia and Nina Bo’nina Brown (last week’s winner) as captains.
Valentina was understandably disheartened when she was the last person picked for a team — I mean, she wasn’t technically picked at all — but nevertheless, she persisted… and ended up winning the whole damn competition! Between her infectious energy on the cheer stage and her flawless bridal look on the runway, Valentina proved herself a force to be reckoned with. (So what if she’s only been in the drag game for 10 months?)
Then came the first lip sync battle of Season 9, which pitted Jaymes Mansfield against Kimora Blac in a rendition of “Love Shack” by the B-52’s (who just happened to be sitting in front of them as guest judges. But, you know, no pressure!) Kimora — who I was honestly surprised to see in the bottom two — came to slay, while Jaymes just kind of waddled around the stage looking confused.
But were you really surprised by Jaymes’ lackluster lip sync? Not 10 minutes earlier, the Wisconsin native received the dressing down of a lifetime, courtesy of Michelle Visage: “I didn’t remember you — and that’s not good,” she said. “I think you like to consider yourself a comedy queen, but I haven’t found anything funny coming from you.” (Ouch! I mean, it was totally accurate… but still. Ouch.)
And so, much to the surprise of absolutely no one, Jaymes became the first queen eliminated from Season 9 of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
