This next piece of casting will have you seeing red: The CW’s comic-inspired Riverdale has tapped noted redhead Molly Ringwald to play the mother of iconic redhead Archie, TVLine has learned. The Sixteen Candles actress — best known to TV audiences for her five-season run on the then-ABC Family drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager — will appear in two episodes, beginning with Season 1’s 10th outing.
Having left Riverdale two years ago to follow her dreams, Ringwald’s Mary Andrews comes back to town in her family’s hour of need. She not only reconnects with Archie (played by New Zealand actor K.J. Apa) and her husband, Fred (90210‘s Luke Perry), but also her former high school gal-pals Hermione and Alice, just in time for a Homecoming Dance.
Set in present day, Riverdale puts a subversive spin on Archie lore, with beloved characters like Betty Cooper (Surviving Jack‘s Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge (newcomer Camila Mendes) and Jughead Jones (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody‘s Cole Sprouse) finding themselves at the center of a murder mystery.
Riverdale premieres Thursday, Jan. 26 at 9/8c.
