If you tune in to this week’s Big Bang Theory expecting to find Bernadette in stirrups and threatening to rain eternal damnation down on Howard for getting her pregnant in the first place, you’re going to be a wee bit disappointed. According to showrunner Steve Molaro, Thursday’s fall finale — which finds Howard and Bernadette welcoming their first child into the world — won’t actually take viewers into the delivery room during the birth.
“That’s an arena that has been covered fairly well on many shows over the years,” Molaro muses, adding that the episode focuses primarily on “what goes on before we get down to, ‘Let’s push the baby out.'”
Meanwhile, if it seems like Bernadette’s pregnancy timeline sped up a bit between September’s season premiere and the December’s birth, Molaro points out that the character has actually been with child for nearly 11 months in the world of the show.
“She knew she was pregnant on Valentine’s Day last year,” he explains. “And [she’s giving birth] on Amy’s birthday, which is December. I don’t know how much longer we could’ve gotten away with it if anyone was paying attention.” (Translation: Molaro & Co. built in a stealth time jump at some point this fall.)
Speaking of Amy’s birthday, the occasion doubles as her and Sheldon’s sex anniversary. Is Sheldon ready for Round 2? “He is coming around, very slowly as he does,” Molaro teases with a laugh. “He still struggles with physical intimacy, but he doesn’t dislike it. And he loves Amy.”
