One decade of nostalgia isn’t enough for The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg.
ABC is developing a ’90s-set spinoff of the hit ’80s comedy, our sister site Deadline is reporting, with Goldberg set to write the pilot script with The Goldbergs executive producer Marc Firek. (The Hollywood Reporter first had the news.)
The spinoff will reportedly center on high school gym teacher Rick Mellor, a recurring character on The Goldbergs; Bryan Callen, who plays Mellor, is attached to star in the new untitled series. (The premise: Mellor and another high school teacher team up to act as father figures to the school secretary’s three kids.)
The Goldbergs has been a solid ratings performer in ABC’s Wednesday night comedy block, currently in its fourth season; it was already sold into syndication back in June. And spinoffs seem to be the latest TV trend, with Monday’s news that CBS is developing a Big Bang Theory spinoff centered on a young Sheldon Cooper.
