Mindy Lahiri is about to get Smash-ed by a new love interest.
Jack Davenport has signed on to guest star on The Mindy Project, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Davenport’s appearance will air during the Hulu rom-com’s upcoming fifth season, premiering Oct. 4.
An alum of NBC’s Smash and the original (and superior) UK version of Coupling, Davenport will play the deliciously named Leland Breakfast, an English theater actor who catches Mindy’s eye while starring in a one-man show on Broadway. Davenport’s Smash character was a surly theater director, too, so there must be something drawing him to roles surrounding the stage. (The British accent, maybe?)
Last season of The Mindy Project ended with Mindy (Mindy Kaling) caught in a love triangle between her son’s dad Danny (Chris Messina) and her co-worker Jody (Garret Dillahunt). So this news means that triangle might have to be modified into a rectangle.
Or maybe an octagon: Bill Hader, Anders Holm, and B.J. Novak — all of whom played boyfriends of Mindy’s on the show — are all slated to return for Season 5 as well. Can we have Morgan start a chart to keep track of all these guys?
Does Jack Davenport’s character sound like a good match for Mindy? Or are you still holding out for a Mindy-Danny, um, coupling?
