Ready for some Genius casting news? Oscar Winner Geoffrey Rush has been tapped to play Albert Einstein in National Geographic Channel’s first-ever scripted series, TVLine has learned. Additionally, actor-musician Johnny Flynn, who starred in the Comedy Central series Brotherhood, will play Young Einstein in the 10-episode drama.
Billed as an anthology drama, Genius will focus on a different innovator each season, with the famous physicist up first. Ron Howard, whose Imagine TV is producing, is set to direct the first episode.
This marks Rush’s first major TV role stateside.
Per Nat Geo, Genius inaugural Einstein-themed season will be based on Walter Isaacson’s critically acclaimed biography and “chart how an imaginative, rebellious patent clerk, who couldn’t get a teaching job or a doctorate, unlocked the mysteries of the atom and the universe. Each episode will explore Einstein’s extraordinary scientific achievements, along with his volatile, passionate and complex personal relationships.”
Said Howard in a statement: “National Geographic’s unwavering commitment to excellence and their support and passion for this project has helped us attract talent such as Geoffrey and Johnny. My excitement for this project grows every day, and I cannot wait to get started.”
Production on Genius begins next month in Prague ahead of a 2017 premiere.
