Dallas Sniper Attack on Police: MTV and BET to Hold Live Town Hall on Friday, and More Special Coverage

In the wake of Thursday night’s Dallas sniper ambush that left five police officers dead and others wounded, MTV News and BET News are teaming for a town hall discussion to air live from MTV’s Times Square studio tonight at 10/9c.

“What Now? An MTV News and BET News Town Hall” will be hosted by MTV’s Charlamagne Tha God, Jamil Smith and Franchesca Ramsey, along with BET News’ Marc Lamont Hill, and offer an open forum of artists, activists and audience members discussing “the issues underlying this latest round in a cycle of violence and tragedy in America.”

The Dallas tragedy of course came on the heels of the fatal, officer-involved shootings of two black men — Alton Sterling, outside a convenience store in Baton Rouge, La., and Philando Castile, during a routine traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minn.

The program will air simultaneously on MTV, BET, VH1, MTV2, mtvU, MTV Live, VH1 Classic, MTV Hits, Centric and Logo, as well as get streamed via the cablers’ Facebook Live and YouTube accounts.

The broadcast networks, meanwhile, are supplementing Friday’s morning-show coverage of the tragedy with special evening newscasts. On NBC, Lester Holt will anchor an hour-long edition of Nightly News, while Scott Pelley will anchor a one-hour edition of the CBS Evening News, both reporting live from Dallas. ABC’s David Muir will report from Dallas in a special edition of World News Tonight, and then at 9 pm co-anchor with Elizabeth Vargas a live edition of 20/20: America in Crisis: Ambush in Dallas.

Turning to Saturday, CBS News at 10 pm will present 48 Hours: Bringing A Nation Together, a one-hour special anchored by Maurice DuBois and featuring reporting from CBS News correspondents on the ground in Dallas and around the country.
