Based on Elmore Leonard’s 1990 bestseller, which five years later became a big-screen hit starring John Travolta, Danny DeVito and Gene Hackman, the MGM TV-produced hour-long dark comedy follows the new character of made man Miles Daly — rather than Travolta’s Chili Palmer — as he tries to leave behind “the business” for show business for the sake of his daughter.
Says EPIX president Mark S. Greenberg: Holmes, also the project’s writer, “has created a fantastic new series that is in the spirit of Leonard’s unique brand of social satire and strong narrative voice.” Adds MGM TV’s Mark Burnett and Steve Stark: The show is “a modern-day reimagining of [the] cult classic where organized crime and Hollywood collide in very funny ways.”
Get Shorty is only EPIX’s third original scripted show. The previously-ordered spy drama Berlin Station (with Hannibal‘s Richard Armitage) and political satire Graves (with Nick Nolte) are both set to premiere this fall, when Shorty will be going into production. It won’t have its debut until summer 2017.
