Coupled, Fox’s new Mark Burnett-produced series premiering Tuesday (at 9/8c), has something you wouldn’t expect from a show in the reality dating genre: An extended moment of silence between a man and a woman.
Wait! Aren’t these folks supposed to be waxing poetic about their “journeys”? Or their “feelings”? Or their tragic backstories?
Fret not. As you’ll see from our exclusive preview clip, Alex (the first guy to arrive on the island) is coaxed into wordless reverie by a comely chica who judges chemistry “just by looking into somebody’s eyes, without talking.”
Alex’s other potential matches prove a little more verbose. Lindsey is thrilled to be asked whether she spells her name with an ‘i’ or a ‘y.’ (Though maybe she’s actually more flattered by his outburst of “Ahhhhh. Ohhhh myyyy!” when he sees her coming around the bend?)
Hosted by Terrence “J” Jenkins, Coupled “follows 12 single, smart and young professional women looking for love, who will meet face-to-face with eligible single men against the beautiful backdrop of the Caribbean islands,” according to Fox. “The women have first choice as they instantly decide if they feel a spark of chemistry and want to spend more time with each guy, or if they don’t feel a connection and want to wait for the next one. The real soap opera unfolds as new couples are formed and have to discover whether or not they have the compatibility to make their relationships last.”
Spoiler alert: There will be texting! Because how’s anyone supposed to express their feelings these days without emojis?
