The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story on Tuesday night premiered to 5.1 million total viewers and a 2.0 demo rating, marking FX’s highest-rated drama debut since The Shield (which bowed to 4.8 mil and a 2.4 in March 2002).

That said, O.J. stands as the cabler’s most watched series launch, edging out The Shield in Live+Same Day numbers.

For comparison’s sake, American Horror Story: Murder House opened its doors to 3.2 mil and a 1.6 rating, The Americans’ debut spied 3.2 mil/1.2 and Sons of Anarchy did 2.5 mil/1.2. Fargo opened with 2.7 million viewers and a 0.8 rating, The Bastard Executioner premiered to 2.1 mil/0.8 and Tyrant opened with 2.1 mil/0.6.

TVLine’s review gave the dramatization of O.J. Simpson’s trial for a double murder a grade of “B+,” as did our readers in a premiere poll.
