Bachelor Black Bachelorette ABC

The Bachelorette Will 'Likely' Address Diversity Problem This Summer

When Lifetime is mining your shortcomings for their own benefit, something is probably wrong.

On the heels of the news that UnREAL Season 2 will put a black “suitor” at the heart of the Everlasting reality show-within-a-show, ABC president Paul Lee was asked if The Bachelor itself will ever address/remedy its long-standing problem of all-but-once revolving around a white star.

Lee of course cited Season 18’s Juan Pablo Galavis as one exception, and also attributed the show’s casting to its “farm team” set-up — meaning, each season’s Bachelor/ette is (lazily) a castoff from the other show’s previous cycle.

But Lee then said he would be “very surprised” if this summer’s edition of The Bachelorette “isn’t diverse.”

“I think that’s likely to happen,” he ventured, adding that other “tweaks” to come from series boss Mike Fleiss “will get us where we want to go.”

Do you think it’s (well past) time for The Bachelor/ette to ditch the “farm team” set-up and start casting more smartly?

  1. ColorBlind says:

They should just cast somebody like Amber or Jubilee or Jami as The Bachelorette and just focus on how awesome they are instead of being “it’s the first African American Bachelorette”…..there is more to people than their skin color

    • Karen says:

Well, when you are a person of color, your skin color does not define you, but it is a PART of who you are so… it matters.

Also diversity, doesn’t mean black person.

    • Katy says:

Being colorblind is not a good thing, it means you don’t acknowledge the hardships a person who’s different from you faces, it means you don’t care if they are going through racism or brutality, or about wanting to see themselves represented on TV.

      • Lucifer says:

No, being colorblind when it comes to race means you do not look at people by their race and value them by who they are by their personality and actions. It has nothing to do with erasing whatever struggles they might have faced due to their race.

    • j says:

      I completely agree with you

    • lechatnoir says:

In America if you have a bit of melanin. The majority of the country will make sure you are reminded of this all your life. Which is why colour blind folk make me laugh with their idea that they can focus on someone s persona.a real life blackchelorette is more interesting than this fictional one.if the show needed to appear colour blind. They could have hired one for the first season.

  2. Amy says:

That sounds suspiciously like they have the next Bachelorette planned. Which based on the spoilers makes it seem likely who the girl in question is.

  3. kn1231 says:

Calling it now, the Bachelorette is definitely going to be Jubilee. The previews made it seem like she’s going to be sticking around long enough to be considered. I’m not sure if they would throw the “diversity” word around for her, but Calia also seems like she could be poised to be chosen as well.

  4. gottabril says:

A black bachelor or bacheloette scares me as a black person all I imagine is flavor of love or I love new york all over again ! smh all the embarrassing boofoonary and misrepresentation of how black people really conduct themselves if it happens I hope it’s not an embarrassing circus of thugs hoes uncouthness and idiots

  5. Nessie says:

This is pretty easy to figure out. Jubilee goes far, ends up being heartbroken by Ben. Woop! She becomes the new bachelorette which ultimately guarantees more black/diverse men vying for her attention and from there they get the first black bachelor who season will air in Jan 2017

  6. Buck Naked says:

Do people really think that this stuff is real? It’s the equivalent of pro wrestling.

  7. lizgibson1994 says:

This woman would make a great Bachelorette!

  8. Lisa says:

I don’t think Caila Quinn would be a good lead for The Bachelorette. But then again, who wants to see her Filipina mother be so mean to non-Asian guys on the show? If Caila is selected, it would be extremely intense as far as racism against non-Asian guys go along with Asian guys and Caila’s mother slut shaming her for dating and interacting with non-Asian guys. It would be a hellish Bachelorette season! Of course, all that stuff would be scripted anyway. Meanwhile, Jubilee, Amber, or Jami would be a better catch because neither one of them would have much helicopter parent drama unlike Caila since they are African-American and African-Americans are more laid back when it comes to their children dating compared to Asians.

  9. Liz Snyder says:

There were three beautiful women of color on this season, Ben’s, and one of them should have been picked for next season’s Bachelorette.
