Game of Thrones Samwell Tarly Family

TVLine Items: Thrones Casts Samwell's Family, FLOTUS on Colbert and More

A major Tarly family reunion is coming to Game of Thrones.

The HBO fantasy drama has cast three actors to play Samwell Tarly’s family in Season 6: James Faulkner (Da Vinci’s Demons) as Randyll, Samwell’s father; Samantha Spiro (From Hell) as his mother, Melessa; and Rebecca Benson (Macbeth) as his sister, Talla.

As previously reported, UnREAL star Freddie Stroma will play Samwell’s brother, Dickon. Other Season 6 additions include Essie Davis (The Babadook), Richard E. Grant (Downton Abbey), Pilou Asbæk (The Borgias), Max von Sydow (The Tudors) and Ian McShane (Deadwood).

Game of Thrones returns in 2016.

Ready for more of today’s newsy nuggets? Well…

* First Lady Michelle Obama will appear on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Monday, Sept. 28, CBS announced Friday.

* Tessa Thompson (Veronica Mars) has joined HBO’s upcoming sci-fi drama Westworld, about a futuristic theme park where the androids go berserk and attack the guests. She will fill the series-regular role of Charlotte Hale, a mysterious and savvy provocateur with a unique perspective on the titular park.

* ABC has given a put pilot commitment to Ordinary People, a romantic comedy from musician John Legend and supermodel Chrissy Teigen. According to Deadline, the project (which will feature musical elements) is loosely inspired by Legend and Teigen’s marriage and centers on an interracial couple with very different personalities and ambitions.

* Transporter film star Jason Statham will exec-produce and star in Viva La Madness, a TV series based on J.J. Connolly’s crime novel. The project — which is being shopped to networks — will star Statham as a wanted British gangster who is hiding out in the Caribbean, but eventually gets back to his criminal ways with two other London thugs.

  1. Steve says:

So now that Ian McShane is not playing Sam’s father nor a Greyjoy, who do we think hes playing. Its not like GOT to keep an actors role secret for as long of a period as this has been. I cant help but feel hes playing Howland Reed and that the Tower of Joy flashback with Sean Bean will finally happen this season. When you think about it, if they wanted to keep the flashback a secret, saying McShane was playing Reed would spoil it. Also I could totally see Sean Bean and Ian McShane being sole survivors of a bloody battle.Howland Reed also fits in with Jons Storyline, and could shed light on the importance of Jon Snow, and the producers still want us to believe Jons dead and Gone. Any other guesses as to who McShane is playing?

    • Joey says:

Other guesses are Septon Meribald or Elder Brother. Howland Reed I guess is an okay guess, but keep in mind he’s supposed to be the father of Jojen and Meera, and McShane is getting up there in years…

  2. Mr. Tran K says:

Thank you, TVLine, for linking to the definition of “put pilot.” And knowing is half the battle!
