Pilot News: Whoopi Goldberg Joins ABC Comedy, Will Juggle With The View

Whoopi Goldberg Delores & Jermaine

Whoopi Goldberg has lined up a second TV gig to compliment her day job.

The View co-host will star in ABC’s comedy pilot Delores & Jermaine, our sister site Deadline reports.

The multi-cam project — based on the real-life experiences of comedian Jermaine Fowler — follows a millennial (played by Fowler) with big ideas, but very little drive. He moves in with his estranged grandmother (Goldberg), a strict, football-loving, former D.C. cop who needs his youthful enthusiasm in her life as much as he needs her old-school parenting.

Production on the pilot — and the series, should it get picked up — will take place in New York City and will work around Goldberg’s View schedule.

Fowler and Danny Chun (Trophy Wife, Hello Ladies) penned the script, with Michael Rotenberg (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Avi Gilbert serving as executive producers.

This can be a BIG hit with Whoopi having so many fans already and shows starring Black actors and actresses are very much on trend…How to Get Away with Murder, Blackish, Empire…it will definitely land on the Fall schedule! Maybe they will finally cancel the View and add another hour of Good Morning America!

  2. Tran says:

The View needs to end in a very bad way. The execs at ABC Daytime still don’t have the guts to do so. It may not be great for Whoopi Goldberg being cast in a sitcom during pilot season.

    • TVGord says:

Some of us are still enjoying The View, but here’s an idea. You could just stop watching (and if you’re not watching, then what’s it to you?).

  3. David4 says:

    The View is dead.

  4. TVNerd says:

Maybe ABC is considering bringing back TGIF and pushing Shark Tank to boost Tuesdays…They can do this:

Wed: The Middle/The Goldbergs/Modern Family/Chev & Bev OR The Brainy Bunch
Fri: Last Man Standing OR Fresh off the Boat/Dr. Ken/Blackish/Delores and Jermaine

  5. DavidSask says:

TGIF on Fridays again would be a smart way to go, move SharkTank to weeknights!

  6. zagsfan says:

Sounds like the perfect role for Whoopi. I’d watch it.

  7. herman1959 says:

All of the people involved are top-knotch; the pilot should be good anyway. Good luck to Whoopi, her talents are being wasted on The View (which I agree needs to go away).

  8. tony says:

    You mean complement not compliment.

  9. Dennis says:

    Page six is reporting otherwise…

  10. Citygirl says:

I think Whoopie sees the writing on the wall about The View. She has kept busy in the last couple of years doing movies, stand up in Vegas AND still do the VIew. I think she jumped at this because she will be able to stay in NY and not travel. I liked the sitcom she was on a while back (10 yrs maybe?). I liked that there were female characters on that show of a certain age that were not young 20-somethings trying to find “love” like so many sitcoms today. I’d watch this new show.

  11. behzadbyhimself says:

Instead of balancing this with The View, she needs to quit that talk show she’s too good for anyway and do this full-time!

  12. Damaris says:

    The View needs Queen Latifah.

  13. colig says:

good lord she is the worst.not the least bit funny.train wreck in the works.
