* Syfy has given a pilot order to The Magicians, an adaptation of author Lev Grossman’s popular fantasy book trilogy penned by John McNamara (Prime Suspect, In Plain Sight) and Sera Gamble (Supernatural). The novels center around a group of New York twentysomethings who, while studying magic, discover the fantasy world they read about as children is all too real and poses a grave danger to humanity.

* The Young and the Restless has cast Scott Elrod (Men in Trees) as Joe Clark, the ex-husband of Jessica Collins’ Avery Clark, per TVGuide.com.

* Gina Gershon (How to Make It in America) will guest-star in Elementary‘s Season 3 premiere as a socialite suspected by Joan of running a notorious drug cartel, reports TVGuide.com.

* Broadchurch will return for Season 2 on BBC America in 2015. In other news from the stateside beebs, the network will co-produce the Cook Islands-set adventure series Tatau, about two friends from London who set off to travel the world.

* truTV has greenlit four new series: reality musical Branson Famous; Hack My Life, a comedic take on life’s little shortcuts that can save you time, effort and money; Kart Life, about the competitive sport of kart racing; and reality competition series The Shake Up, which will settle once and for all which bar owners have the best recipe for success.
