SERIES AND EPISODE | How I Met Your Mother, “Last Forever”
TITLE | “Downtown Train”
ARTIST | Everything But The Girl
ALBUM | Acoustic (1992)
WHY IT ROCKED | Rewind to Ted and Tracy standing on the Farhampton train platform where their romance begins, playfully arguing over the yellow umbrella. As they spew out clever things that TM could stand for (“Totally My umbrella,” “Terribly Mistaken,” “has always belonged To Me”) “Will I see you tonight on a downtown train,” plays beautifully in the background.
SERIES AND EPISODE | Crisis, “If You Are Watching This I Am Dead”
TITLE | “Motherless Child”
ARTIST | Matthew Perryman Jones
ALBUM | Swallow the Sea (2008)
WHY IT ROCKED | After Aziz is released to his mother, Meg talks to Gibson on the phone and demands that she get her daughter back. He tells her, “You’re not like the others. You and I, we’re just getting started.” Meanwhile, this haunting song sends chills up your spine and makes you feel the parents’ heartbreak. The rich and powerful have feelings, too!
SERIES AND EPISODE | The Blacklist, “Milton Bobbit”
TITLE | “Can’t Pretend”
ARTIST | Tom Odell
ALBUM | Long Way Down (2013)
WHY IT ROCKED | The song title says it all: Liz tells Red that she can’t even look at Tom anymore, let alone touch him, after adding more information to her whiteboard. Red tells her to be patient … so that’s exactly what she does. It looks like Liz and Tom both can pretend as they do what they do best: lie. As the song says, “I guess that’s love…” or something like it.
SERIES AND EPISODE | Shameless, “Lazarus”
TITLE | “The Cold”
ARTIST | Exitmusic
ALBUM | Passage (2012)
WHY IT ROCKED | The gray buildings, dull blue sky and white frozen lake create a striking backdrop as Carl wheels Frank to the lake. Frank asks for his bottle, stands up out of his chair and takes a sip of his drink, declaring his victory against death. A giant smile appears on his face as he opens his arms wide and yells, “I’m alive!” “The Cold” is invigorating, isn’t it?
SERIES AND EPISODE | About a Boy, “About a Poker Night”
TITLE | “MMMBop”
ARTIST | Hanson
ALBUM | MMMBop (1996)
WHY IT ROCKED | A monster with yellow teeth, bulging eyes and a skinny tongue growls on the screen as the scary movie plays against the terrifying sounds of… Hanson? In an adorable moment between Will and Marcus (and a drunken one for Fiona), Will gives Marcus his iPod so he won’t hear the scary movie playing – and Will was right, it does make it better!
SERIES AND EPISODE | Supernatural, “Meta Fiction”
TITLE | “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine (Anymore)”
ARTIST | Frankie Valli
ALBUM | Solo (1967)
WHY IT ROCKED | Metatron drops the needle on his record player and Frankie Valli’s song accompanies him as he writes his story. Castiel rips everything off the walls, looks at the angel siren and opens the door to his followers waiting for him. If we have to wait to see what happens next, at least we have Valli’s catchy tune to play us off.
SERIES AND EPISODE | The Mindy Project, “Be Cool”
TITLE | “Just What I needed”
ARTIST | The Cars
ALBUM | Just What I Needed: The Cars Anthology (1995)
WHY IT ROCKED | This fun song perfectly completes a montage of Mindy and Danny (aka the “sly dogs”) making up excuses to get some secret alone time. So what if the office now thinks Mindy accidentally put a patient into a coma? There’s nookie to be had!
SERIES AND EPISODE | Awkward, “No Woman is an Island”
TITLE | “New Shores”
ARTIST | The Blues and Greys
ALBUM | New Shores — Single (2013)
WHY IT ROCKED | “And we wade through the waves and got carried away,” or in Jenna and Matty’s case, they wade through college essays and get carried away. Jenna realizes that she should help out her former flame and shows up at his house ready to write… or maybe more than write. They share some sexual tension-filled glances as this sweep-you-off-your-feet song helps them right onto the bed!
