When the fire with which Grey’s Anatomy concluded last season was put out, Bailey thought that the worst was over. But in Thursday’s episode, she learned that she’d thought wrong. Very wrong. The arrival of Jackson’s grandpa, Harper Avery, to assess the damage done — to his foundation’s bank balance more than to the hospital — led to one of Grey Sloan’s finest getting sacked. And, given Amelia’s diagnosis in the Season 14 premiere — coupled with her determination to keep her condition a secret — that first dismissed doctor’s head wasn’t necessarily the only one on the chopping block. When the metaphorical smoke cleared, who still had a job? Read on…
‘IF THE FOUNDATION PULLS OUT, WE’LL FOLD’ | Early on in “Go Big or Go Home,” Bailey was on edge about Harper’s imminent arrival — with good reason. The grump didn’t like the welcome wagon that she rolled out to greet him, and it was pretty much downhill from there. When not belittling Jackie — sorry, Jackson — he terrorized the chief and, frankly, exhausted Catherine. Finally, concluding that Grey Sloan was a financial drain with which he didn’t want his foundation (or its coffers) involved, Scrooge announced that he was pulling its funding.
When Bailey couldn’t reverse Harper’s decision by pointing out the long-term upside of not merely having repaired the hospital but upgraded it, she warned that, because of Stephanie’s well-documented heroism, “to pull our funding now would bring about a PR nightmare for your foundation.” Fine, he said, relenting. Grey Sloan could keep its funding — but Bailey was fired! Adding insult to injury, he asked Catherine to take her somewhere else to “have her feelings,” because he had calls to make. “I will fix this!” Catherine assured Bailey. But Miranda had to let her do it her way since she’d “embarrassed that old white man!” Turned out, there wasn’t much need to worry after all: When next they entered the room, Harper was dead! Seizing the opportunity to undo the damage he’d done, Jackson and Catherine kept it to themselves that the geezer had canned Bailey.
‘NEVER SHOULD HAVE CALLED YOU’ | While Amelia remained adamant about not letting anyone at Grey Sloan know about her brain tumor, she was at least willing to call in reinforcements: specifically, Tom Koracick (Greg Germann, who’ll always be Fish to me). Besides being Hopkins’ head of neuro and “the most arrogant teacher [Amelia] ever had,” the doc was sharp as a scalpel and quickly deduced, based on his patient’s scans, that she was not — and long hadn’t been — of sound mind. However, rather than report her to the medical board, Tom had her inform Bailey, who, since she was busy, referred Amelia to Richard. During the trio’s meeting, Tom declared that she wasn’t to perform surgery again until he cleared her to do so. Later, DeLuca tried to clue in Maggie to Amelia’s condition under the pretense of discussing the poor way he’d handled their breakup. Alas, she didn’t notice the scans behind him or pick up on his hints about wanting to “Amelia-rate” the situation, she just accepted the apology that she decided he’d long owed her. (Since, after all, thanks to him, her father knew what sex sounds she made!)
As Shepherd continued to undergo testing, she tried to order DeLuca to pull the files on all the amazing surgeries she’d performed while “compromised” but was told he was Tom’s whipping boy now, not hers. When ultimately she did get the files, she feared she’d harmed many a patient. Intervening, Richard looked over the records and reassured Amelia that she had a better mortality rate than Derek — and he hadn’t had a brain tumor. Furthermore, he encouraged her to come clean with the people who love her. At last, Amelia confided in Maggie and asked for her help telling Owen — and flat-out asked her to tell Meredith, since she’d long accused her sister-in-law of being crazy, and this kind of made her right. At the episode’s conclusion, Amelia paged Owen, who was busy railing about how she’d pushed him away when he noticed her scans behind her. After Maggie filled in Mer, she and Owen were by Amelia’s side as she was checked in as a patient.
‘I DON’T DO LOVE TRIANGLES’ | When Mer’s former psychiatrist, Walter Karr, checked in, she took advantage of the opportunity to discuss with him her situation with Nathan and Megan (who, since she was recovering nicely, was eager to get back to son Farouk, stat). “I was wonderful” about it all, Grey hilariously pointed out. Yet she was still stuck in a love triangle! Later, she insisted to the shrink that her feelings toward Nathan were now “rage bordering on physical violence.” Calling B.S., he asked her to dig deeper. Before she could, Walter had to be rushed into surgery. Meanwhile, Megan unloaded on Owen. As the episode drew to a close, Mer admitted to Nathan that she was angry because he was throwing away a gift she was never going to get. “Show [Megan] that you love her,” she pleaded. “Please don’t blow this.”
‘PEOPLE SHOULDN’T ASK BIG QUESTIONS UNLESS THEY ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER’ | In other plot developments, Arizona sang Carina’s praises to April, even going so far as to say that her new lover’s sexual “skill level is curative.” (Eliza who?) Carina, who it seemed had a kinky side, was also able to help her girlfriend with a woman who’d been in labor for ages by suggesting she try, er, manual manipulation. Elsewhere, Jo and Alex celebrated their reunion by canoodling in the elevator. After treating a teenager who’d been injured staging an elaborate hocosal, Jo staged a mini-hocosal of sorts to ask Alex to move back in.
So, what did you think of the episode? Hit the comments!
I am pleasantly surprised they didn’t wait several episodes for the Amelia tumor reveal. Amelia is a character I want to like but that has been hard the last couple of seasons. Here’s to hoping this storyline will help redeem the character.
I am still loving Arizona and Carina, but I am hoping they will more throughly develop Carina’s character and not just have her be the female sex specialist. We are only on episode two, so I’m not panicking yet.
Definitely thought the death of Harper Avery would be a bigger event. That can’t be it, right?
Good point about Harper but I think that’s it. BTW, that was the third episode. I know the season premiere was two hours but it was actually episodes one and two just on the same night.
Honestly, giving Amelia a brain tumor that they can use to just explain away all of her ridiculous and harmful behavior for the past decade (especially since she was already known for being a reckless mess before that) seems like such lazy writing. Like the writers know how many fans dislike her, so they’re trying to erase the crazy stuff and wipe her slate clean. *eyeroll* On both Grey’s and Private Practice, Addie, Derek, Mark, etc. have spoken extensively about she’s always been a hot, reckless mess, even when she was a teenager. This tumor didn’t cause that personality trait, and I feel like using it to redeem the character is so freaking lazy in a season that is otherwise on fire so far.
.
Also, I felt awful, but I was laughing so hard at Harper Avery’s death. I’m surprised they played it that way given how big of a deal the guy was.
Harper Avery was a sexist, racist piece of work. Probably the funniest death in Grey’s history. But I have to wonder what it’ll mean to the leadership/ownership of Grey Sloan Memorial and the Harper Avery Foundation… Based on his interactions there’s no way Harper Avery would put Jackson or Catherine in charge. He could put his son (Jackson’s father) in charge for spite, but Harper clearly didn’t think much of him either. Could Harper have known Jo’s husband? Maybe this is how Dr. Paul Stadler will be connected to GSMH (in addition to having an affair with April)…
Probably wrong, but I’m glad I’m not the only one to have found Harper Avery’s death funny!
I haven’t really enjoyed Grey’s for a few seasons now, but I’ve actually enjoyed the first two episodes of this season. Thank goodness it’s getting back to the way it used to be…at least a little bit. The writing is so much better this season. Everyone isn’t yelling at each other all the time! Keep it up!
Last week wasn’t a fluke! I think the tide has turned and Grey’s is well on its way to being back on track. So far co-showrunner Krista Vernoff has kept her word about giving us a lighter, funnier, sexier show. We are seeing bonding, relationships and more playfulness. I am loving it.
Miranda/Harper/Catherine/Jackson: Harper was a pill. The scenes were good though. I did say to myself “Oh no, not another financial crisis for the hospital.” So glad they aren’t going there again. I thought Miranda and Catherine were funny together and their scene outside the conference room added to the lighter tone.
Maggie/Deluca: How dare they tease me with them. Put them back together STAT.
Mer and the doc: Having Mer talk with her old psychiatrist was a good idea. They have history and like each other. It seemed like they were having a conversation but he was helping her and she was responding to it. I liked their interaction.
Alex/Jo: Sorry. I don’t care. I love him but still not a fan of Jo’s but it appears this is the woman he loves so as long as she makes him happy–I will tolerate her.
Amelia: I do feel for her and I am enjoying Caterina’s acting. It is subtle vs histrionics. I thought the scene where she told Maggie was touching and well done. It’s great that we’ve witnessed so many scenes between Mer/Maggie/Amelia as sisters. They are all so different but they do love each other. Maggie and Amelia aren’t even blood sisters but none of that matters because to them–they ARE. Loved Mer getting into bed with her and not even saying a word. We already knew this would pull Owen back in.
I hope they can keep it up because last season was still gives me nightmares over how bad it was. They are off to a very good start thus far!
You forgot to mention April talking about the greatest marriage proposal ever — when her boyfriend staged a flash mob to propose to her.
Don’t care about April. She is such a cry baby. Jackson needs to so move on to Maggie. April needs to be alone and unhappy so the next man in her lifeshe will appreciate.
I agree! But I kinda feel Jackson is the problem with Japril though. He’s just so mean to April and she deserves to be happy.
Yuck Maggie. Actually so far I can tolerate Maggie this season.
Yes, April was hilarious
Nope……still don’t care about Amelia.
*yawns at Alichat*
Still don’t care about Amelia either!
Me neither #TeamTumor
It didn’t feel like Greys
It actually felt like ORIGINAL Grey’s – watch the first couple of seasons.
The whole thing between Meredith and Nathan is sooooo boring… Let him have Megan and let’s find another man for Mer…
I enjoyed last week, but this episode felt like they were trying too hard.
It’s all, look at us and how light and sexy and funny we are, hahahaha! If you have to say you’re breezy, it negates the breezy.
This episode was boring and not funny even though they tried really hard to be funny.
If they really do Jaggie, I’m probably out.
Unless you can think of another way. I’d love to read it. Season 13 was dark and full of conflict and infighting. Most of us agree it was one of their weakest seasons. They are going in a new direction and people still complain. *Shrugs*Real question and not sarcasm but how else should they demonstrate the lighter, sexier and funnier season the EP promised? It has to to be showcased in the acting and the dialogue.
Can the writers give April a break please ? She is always there for everyone else – can she have some real friends who are there for her too. Sarah Drew is an amazing actrees – I want her to have good story lines and screen time. I check her scenes on YT – cannot stomach all the Maggie / Jackson scenes so no longer watching the show. Just a big nooooooooo. I am fed up with Maggie and all the screen time she is getting when other characters deserve story lines. Let Maggie and Deluca hook up again and leave Japril alone to figure out how to reunite.
agreed to much Maggie screen time. Please give it to Arizona and Carina.
Loved everything about the story line. I want Maggie to turn to Jackson for comfort. My only suggestion is we need more medical situations.
I love Jaggie. It’s like people don’t watch the show. April and Jackson do not like each other!
Idk, I’ve been an avid viewer of this show, and I still physically cringe when Jackson and Maggie touch. Just straight up makes me feel uncomfortable, but that’s probably because I saw their closeness last season as two stepsiblings getting to know each other/becoming family.
Bygones.
I’m still so conflicted about this tumor storyline. On one hand, I’m pissed that they’re basically using this tumor as an excuse for ALL of Amelia’s behavior ever since her introduction on the show (and, technically, her entire time on Private Practice, since apparently the tumor has been growing for 10 years now). But on the other hand, I love it, because it’s SO dramatic and so very Grey’s.
This. Makes you wonder who the real Amelia is and if any of her friendships/relationships were real, you know? Then again, I always wished Amelia and Meredith would get closer, maybe this situation brings them closer together. The scene at the end….well, there was a dust in our living room..:) Aswell as the scene where Amelia told Maggie. Powerful stuff! Amelia still hasn’t told Meredith about the baby she lost (she only told Alex), so here’s hoping she’ll bring that up later to clear things up even more. Also wondering at what stage the tumor took over some of her decision making. When she came to PP? When she lost the baby? When she got on Grey’s?
Always Fish to me too. I wonder how many people got the reference?!
This was more vintage Grey’s!! I thought it was hilarious the way the handled Harper-Avery’s death!!! Remember Harper-Avery’s name was bigger and is used a lot not the person! I wonder if Amelia and Owen will have a real marriage now with Amelia’s tumor being found??? They went from the wedding to disaster in record time! No honeymoon! Lol. I think I’m about ready for Meredith to find love again!! I’m happy Joe and Alex are back together! I wonder how long before her husband shows up??
He’ll always be Fish to me, too! The scene with him and Amelia was perfect. The missteps were the completely predictable: shrink coding out while lecturing Meredith and Maggie missing the huge flashing lights and blinking arrows. “Old white man’s” death was also predictable, but did provide some comic relief.
It’s great to have the old Grey’s snark back again.
A) I, like so many other people, still don’t care about Amelia. She’s the worst.
B) It was ho-co-pro, not hocosal. Sheesh. Get annoying teen slang right or don’t do it at all! ;)
I am loving this new season!!
. . . But Miranda had to let her do it her way since she’d “embarrassed that old white man!” Really? You going there? Just can’t keep the political crap out of the show. If someone said “that old black man” lawd almighty – the fallout would’ve been overwhelming. Funny how there is one set of rules for some, and a completely different set of rules for others. Bloody hypocrites!
When White people deal with centuries of oppression and racism—maybe this argument will have more merrit.
Lmao I’m sorry but you’d have to be insanely ignorant to a) think that this was political and b) not see the difference between saying “old white man” and “old black man” in this context. Please educate yourself – your comment is embarrassing.
The fact that they forgot that dr.robins lost her leg !!! comon know showing her wearing a heal and in skinny jeans ?! are you even serious ! or its old news now and she grow a leg already ?
