Chicago P.D.‘s Marina Squerciati and Patrick John Flueger Explain Why ‘Burzek’ Isn’t Back Together (Yet)
Things have been going really well for Chicago P.D.‘s Burgess and Ruzek lately, which begs the question: When will they stop messing around and finally get back together?
In the aftermath of Burgess’ miscarriage last season, the pair have only gotten closer while working through their shared trauma. They hang out together, work together and as Ruzek so expertly observed in the Jan. 13 episode “Tender Age,” they’re basically an old married couple at this point.
A romantic reconciliation seems like the logical next step, so why haven’t they moved forward in their relationship? For Marina Squerciati, who plays Burgess, the not-couple is in too good of a place right now to shake things up.
“What’s keeping them apart is how well they get along,” Squerciati tells TVLine. “Burgess is scared of anything new right now because of this miscarriage and the trauma she suffered, so comfort is the main goal in her life. Just flannel shirts and ice cream on the couch — anything else seems scary. Their biggest problem is they’re too comfortable, and Burgess is really happy right now.”
Patrick John Flueger, who plays Ruzek, thinks the pair is exactly where they need to be at the moment. “I think that it’s an incredibly adult relationship,” he explains. “These are two people that love each other enough to take steps back when they need to, and lean forward when they need to. At the end of the day, they just love each other, and they can’t really escape from that. Right now, [Ruzek and Burgess] feeling each other out and feeling out life works for them really well.”
Though they’ve hit a pretty comfortable routine, there is still the potential for the Intelligence detectives to once again make things official. However, Squerciati says that it’s going to take a lot more than sweet talk for Burgess to want to make that leap again: “Ruzek says a lot of really wonderful things, but I think he needs to do something super romantic or really show up.”

What I really want to know is why did she start getting billed ahead of him in the opening credits? For like the first 6 seasons he was billed ahead of her and then all of a sudden he wasn’t anymore.
How about Upton being billed higher than both of them ? Shes only been on like 3 -4 seasons.

I think burgess is right to take things slow. Let her get comfortable in the relationship. I wassadden when she lost her baby I really think will make a good mother one day with the right husband
No reunion. Frat boy Ruzek had his shot. Pump his brakes and slow his roll. Time for Burgess to move on, bat her big eyes at Atwater for a change. Have her compassion for him in his problem with the cops that have been harassing him light their romantic flame. Let that storyline marinate for a minute. Ruzek and Atwater seem to be cool with each other. Create some new tension in the house!
No because Atwater he’s too good of a guy he wouldn’t do that to his friend.
Also Atwater is both of their best friend and was going to be Ruzek’s best man. From the first seasons they had Atwater and Burgess more of a friend and partners.

They are natural together. I believe the writers should heat up their relationship . It would be great to see a relationship that has had Issues rise above them and again become a couple.
They are soulmates of course I think they should be together. Maybe if Burgess takes McKayla in, Ruzek may step into that situation too. I think they will end up together sooner or later. Fingers crossed! No matter if they don’t, they will always be there for each other.
I think it’s so cute when the team go on a raid and all you hear is Adam calling out Burgess you okay? It’s so obvious to us how he feels about her… Maybe the writers should catch up with us.
I think they know, if they don’t then I don’t know what to think, I think eventually they will b together, I’m just hoping this next episode doesn’t drive them apart, I would say for them to move on but I don’t think they are meant for anyone else but each other. I mean they are gotten together for a one night stand a few times but this time it feels different. Keeping my fingers crossed. I feel they may stay together but I still feel a little doubt.
I think Burgess and Rusek should get back together eventually when they are comfortable with it.
They should be together. Both Ruzek and Burgress love each other deeply but feel that if they really commit to each other something will go wrong.

I would love to see these 2 get married. They really seem to get along they know each other like a book and they just belong together.
I’d just like to know when the show plans to reunite burgess and Atwater… Those two are friends right?… I can’t tell because Adam seems to be the only person either of them really interact with week after week.. Whatever happens or doesnt with Burzek… To me is secondary what I want is what I’ve wanted for ages with this show.. For characters to interact… Jay and Adam… Upton and burgess.. Burgess and Jay.. Upton and Atwater etc
Quite a while ago there was an episode where Burgess and Upton were kidnapped and Upton was beaten to a pulp. Burgess escaped and got them rescued. They both slept wit Ruzek so a personal relationship between them could be uncomfortable. But they work well together. The partnership pairings seem to be male and female..even though they all work together as a team. Voight and Atwater need girlfriends. I love this show.
I totally agree… Voight and Atwater need girlfriends. Come on writers…I want to see Voight showing his tender side as well. It would be nice to see them both go home to someone at night.

From what I have read, Sophia wanted to leave, but Jon Seda did not and he was just written out, which I think was a huge mistake

Me too. My favorite out of P.D. and Med as I don’t watch Fire other than cross-over episodes. I love them even when they are just friends and partnering together but I love them together more than anything.

He “did her wrong” when he asked her to marry him and then kind of strung her along and avoided any real steps towards their relationship moving forward, not to mention later on with Upton.
I love Ruzek and Burgess and I think they both have their own faults and made mistakes in their past relationship but it originally started with Ruzek not wanting to fully commit.
While I agree to a point, they were both at fault there. Yes Ruzek was a bit flippant about the wedding (like most guys tbh) but Burgess was pretty childish with ridiculous things like the ‘push test’…they were both immature & had a lot of growing up to do, which they both have.
The Hailey thing, while it was a terrible thing to watch, which no chemistry whatsoever was several years after they broke up, Roman was a few weeks. Both equally stupid though.
Back to the original point….they’ve both done each other wrong, and I am liking this new found maturity of both of them.
I think the episode after or so but there was a scene with Burgess and Roman walking up steps to someone’s apartment and he brought something up like they shouldn’t get married or something like that, and then something in the car. That started making her think about it. I remember her saying ” you brought it up”. So to me Roman was a big part of their break-up, also a ” push test”. I remember Paddy saying it was dumb and he kinda blames Roman. I agree with him

Adam and Kim belong together. They both have tried other relationships but they didn’t work. Deep down Adam is always there for Kim, even when she lost the baby (season 7). They fully understand each other. Let them take it slow and easy for season 8. Eventually Chicago PD should make them a super couple an example for other couples Burezk forever. ❤️❤️

No they shouldn’t because of all they’ve went through in the past they need to move on from each stay friends and find new love interest, I think the writers should get Kevin and Kim together romantically and stop separateing them so that they won’t get together romantically. Or I’m and Adam should find new love interest
The show already has a brother/sister vibe romance going on with Upstead, they don’t need another.
I’d love to see more of the Burgess/Atwater friendship though. I think these shows don’t do enough to show that men & women can be great friends, work together & not jump into bed together. They should showcase more men/women platonic working relationships/friendships and they are sitting on a goldmine with these two.
In a vacuum I agree.. But isn’t that kinda unfair to Kevin.. While all the other characters play musical chairs with each other… Now ppl wanna say let’s keep EP things Platonic when there’s only one person left out…
I think it’s totally unfair to Kevin that he’s ‘missed’ out…don’t get me wrong. But it would also be totally unfair to hook him up with someone in the Unit just because they’ve all done it, so why not.
It’s enough of a swingers club as it is. It would also cheapen Atwater’s character & he doesn’t get enough attention already, let’s not throw him into that mess as well.
Sounds like Im the only one but “kind of” liked Hailey & Ruzek together. Maybe its because it was just a fling but I thought it was steamy. On the other hand , Ruzek & Burgess getting back together would be fine. I dont know abt Hailey & Jay together though.
Hell yes they should be back together. Please stop playing with their emotions & ours. They were meant to be a couple. I love me some Ruzek & Burgess. Also when that Black Sister gets out of jail, I hope her & Kev can hook back up. If they ever take Voit off the show, I’m done watching it. I was very upset when Al was killed & bring back Antonio.

You can tell he cares and worries about her. She is always looking at him on the sly. So there are feelings there on both sides, it’s just matter of close minute and sparks will fly.
