Chicago Fire Preview: Jesse Spencer and Kara Killmer Tease New Romances, ‘Serious Angst’ for Casey and Brett
Are sparks flying for Chicago Fire‘s Casey and Brett… with other people?
As showrunner Derek Haas previously teased to TVLine, this Wednesday’s episode (NBC, 9/8c) will introduce “some new characters” who will serve as “potential roadblocks” to a relationship between the captain and the paramedic. During a recent interview, star Jesse Spencer revealed that one of those newbies does, indeed, catch Casey’s eye in a romantic sense.
“He meets this girl. She’s in a car accident, and she’s a fairly attractive girl, and she comes out with a joke in the middle of this quite intense incident,” Spencer tells TVLine. “It’s strange, and it’s quite funny and, I guess, refreshing to have a sense of humor in such a dangerous situation. So he’s sort of taken off guard, and they meet up a couple times, and they sort of, I guess, go on a couple dates.”
Brett, too, will be preoccupied with someone else while she and Casey try to navigate this uncertain chapter in their friendship. “There’s a new character that comes in from another firehouse that interacts with Brett,” her portrayer Kara Killmer previews. “It’s a roadblock in every sense of the word. Brett is trying to take space. She’s trying to get over her feelings about Casey and trying to move on.”
Given Brett’s adamant stance that she and Casey can never be in a romantic relationship because of the Gabby of it all, the firefighter’s decision to date a new gal seems like an understandable choice. But it’s “awkward, too, because it comes out of nowhere,” Spencer notes, “and he said that he’s going to give Brett some space, but what does that mean? Are they going to go out and start dating other people full-time? They’re still around each other and trying to be friendly with each other. It’s gonna make it more complicated, I think, for the characters to do that, not less complicated.”
Warns Killmer: “We have some serious angst coming your way.”
And it’s not just Casey and Brett — or fans of the would-be couple — who are feeling like they’re so tantalizingly close to getting what they want, only to have it yanked away from them. “I feel like it toys with us, too, as human beings, ’cause you’re rooting for your character, too,” Spencer says. “You gotta go out there and live it. You can’t just sit back and let it pass you by. You gotta live it, as much as you can… So it’s a bit angsty for us, too, to have to deal with the awkwardness of all this stuff.”

It sucks to me but that’s me. Casey and Brett’s romance should of started this year, it’s been two years. Drag it to long Haas, nobody will care if they get together or not. And their your biggest buzz on show good luck.

My opinion they both deserve to be happy!! But not with each other! Brett was best friends with Gabby, Dated her brother, held their child while they got married. This is why I don’t watch CF and it was my favorite. Go Casey and Brett be happy. But not together romantically. Just be friends.

I totally agree they are not compatible first off that’s her best friends ex. And she has been with majority of the staff so just go get someone from the outside of the firehouse im sick of them sleeping aroind with each other and other staff. Its not a good look.

I’m all for angst and a slow burn but enough is enough. Like someone else said, if they drag it too long viewers lose interest. If they’re going to be together, the.n let them get together already! You don’t need to write every love jealous love trope that exists. The development has been great so far. I hope this resolves in a few episodes and not the entire season.
Casey and Brett are perfect together and will make a lovely couple. Great chemistry, they just need a great love story now so the show needs to get to it!
Ugh, not a fan of this. Casey should be fighting for Brett and showing her that she’s the one. Him just moving on and going out with some other girl is just going to reaffirm her fears about his feelings for her.
Yes, he should fight for her and prove to her that she is worth it and that she is his number one. Now I would not mind if they both end up in the same place and focus on one another instead of their dates.
The show is just trying to stall them that’s all. We need to be patient. Brettsey is on its way
Does Casey not remember that Gabby is the one who left him? I can’t believe he’d be undecided about taking her back. Brett is such a sweetheart.
Plus, he made it clear to Gabby already that he was a “Chicago guy.” If he would just sit down and talk to Brett and make her be quiet for just a second! It’s “more complicated than that”! He is doing the same thing he did with Gabby — putting himself aside because it’s “too much for her.” Didn’t he already learn his lesson? Come on, grow a pair, Casey! Fight for your girl!

And the writers should really stop recycling the storylines. Casey had already pushed Brett into another man’s arms (hello, Chaplain Kyle, I’m talking about you). Why do it again with this new guy??? I hope the writers will realize that the viewers are tired of this drama for the sake of drama approach. I’d be happy to see a healthy loving relationship of two equal partners. Matt and Gabby were never on the same page and she never cared about his opinion. Sylvie is different. That’s why I always thought Brett and Casey are made for each other.
Casey and Brett are made for each other! But this show does love drama just for the sake of it. It’s like the writers just like repeating st.ory lines for some reason

Casey might not remember but the FANS do! She was horrible and self centred. Brett is a great match for Casey and they will be very happy as a couple.

And the only ones that don’t want Brettsey are Dawson fans and only Monica fans, not the show or Jesse’s. Monica moved on. You had your couple for six years. It’s 2021 it’s time your lead actor to get another great new love story with another actress on your that deserves the spotlight now You gave that fanbase everything on a silver platter and it’s time another fanbase get what they deserve. Stop playing around Haas it’s getting really old and not fun anymore.

Monica left over two years ago and it’s weird for her to be brought up every week on the show. It’s a pandemic and fans want some happiness. Let Casey and Brett be happy already.
Laura I agree with you too. That’s why am skipping these shows. Am recording them and going back later. As much as I love the whole show all the actors and Jesse of course. Am not stressing myself out over a tv show, couple I want. While Haas sits back and yanks the chains of their fans and Casey and Brett’s fanbase. Been stressed out for four years and a year over this virus. And life’s to short to stress out over a tv show. Nope not doing it, not playing it.
And most of them aren’t even watching the show…or so they claim…so why should the writers care what they say? And yet, here they are with their usual mantras about the “lack of chemistry”, girl code, etc, etc
Most of the anti-brettseys are just making up lies about Casey and Brett to have a go at because they have nothing else to criticise about them and there are NO real reasons they shouldn’t be together whatsover! Gabby deserted Casey and didnt say goodbye to her so-called best friend Sylvie so the rubbish about girl code and ‘best friend’ is just that – rubbish. Casey and Brett are both adults and free to fall in love with each other! Even Monica Raymund said so but her fans and gabby fans are in denial! Brettsey is endgame!
The show should do the right thing and keep them both with these other people from outside the firehouse. They have zero chemistry together. It’s so forced that I cringe watching their scenes now. Both characters deserve better than this.

This storyline is so annoying. Put Bret and Casey together already. I personally think that Dereck Haas liked Monica Raymond so much that he is just hoping that he will get a telephone call one day to tell him that she wants to return to the show. Look she chose to leave the show. She had an excellent part. Her character was front and center all the time and yet she wanted to move on. I do hope that Bret and Casey do become a couple

You have hit the nail on the head here Ruth. This is so obviously what is going on with the show runner. But sadly for him, Monica isn’t going back to CF so he needs to just stop messing the fanbase about and get on with Brettsey becasue that’s what is needed now. Not this soap opera carry on.
At this point I’m kind of over Brett and Casey I think the writers already screwed up, by the time they put them together nobody will care.

You’ve had them get closer, develop feelings to not doing crap about it. Matt knows what he wants but won’t communicate it, like if he waits long enough Gabby will come back and he’ll not have to worry about it and can go back her, to a manipulative one sided relationship like it’s all he deserves. Gabby left, she’s not Bretts friend anymore. There’s too much drama for me in this show and not the good kind, the stupid kind that makes no sense. The first few seasons were awesome then they started adding this crazy crap. Ughhh.

Dumb is getting to be the right word for this carry on. The show needs to sharpen its wits and it’s writing and get Casey and Brett together and they need to be happy for once in their lives. It’s Derek who thinks if he waits long enough Monica might come back. Not gonna happen! The gabby obsession needs to be deleted. The fans want Brettsey and it has a huge fanbase now!
If you’re going to put them together, then put them together already, and if not then write better stories for them. It’s turning into a CW level drama.

Ela é empática, amorosa, profissional, linda e muito corajosa. Merece ser feliz! Casey que lute! E ele o fará. Acredito que essa nova personagem vira mostrar isso pra ele, igual a Naomi fez ele se desligar do passado tenebroso. Brettsey é real e vai acontecer. Mas, precisa desse enredo. Afinal, como Derek mesmo disse: Casey vai precisar lutar mais que a Brett. Então..veremos como ele fará isso.
Casey should fight for Brett. Convince her she’s the one on his mind. He told Severide he didn’t even think about Gaby in a long time. He refused to join Gaby TWICE. He should mention THAT to Brett. Brett is good for him, they both care so much. About other people too. Unlike Gaby who always thought of herself first imo. Especially in the later seasons. Don’t put too much angst in there for Brett/Casey, don’t drag it out too long..

Casey and Brett are old storyline!!! What I’m tired of is how every year you mess with Stella and Severide…..now you have Severide being a fool about how he thinks everyone is benging over backwards for Stella. Time for him to grow a pair and stand up for her!!!

This storyline made me finally give up on the show. They’ve dragged this out for multiple seasons. No one likes a constant tease. Especially a bad one.

I’m just about to give up on Fire. I don’t like Brett with Matt AT ALL SHE’S HIS EX WIFE BEST FRIEND. Give Brett her own love interest she deserves it. I have watched the show from the beginning. Now, I don’t have any interest in the show. Fire needs a Strong character that is compelling, a great story line. It’s fleeting in my eyes.
I dont want her with him she has been with everyone of the firestaff that makes her look so hard up and this is her best friends ex. That means Gabby really was not her friend. She wants Gabbys left overs. Get her someone else not Casey.

I feel that the writers should get closure between Matt and Dawson like either call her or she comes back and they can get closure that way, the writers also should try to get Casey and Brett to work things out between them romantically not send two love interest for the two of them
The whole Dawson thing is just tiresome and needs to be ended. But Derek seems to think it’s funny. He must be enjoying himself messing the fans around!

honestly I’m sick of all this. they’ve been teasing this for the last 2 seasons just to pull this crap. I’m seriously considering not watching this anymore cause I’m so sick and tired of this. Also as a side note: what their doing with Kidd and Severide is just stupid.
I really like Brett and Casey’s chemistry….as friends. They have a good strong friendship and I really enjoy watching their interactions in friend mode. But when it gets romantic, giant yawn. I don’t understand why shows really struggle to just let a man and woman be friends, it is really too bad. I think it would be more interesting to see how their other romantic partnerships interact with their friendship, but not go down the road of too jealous and it ruins all other relationships-very cliche.
