The Winchesters Poster Teases a ‘Supernatural Love Story’ — With a Hint of American Horror Story?
A striking poster for The CW’s Supernatural prequel series, The Winchesters, promises — no surprise — “a supernatural love story” between Dean and Sam’s future parents, John and Mary (played by Drake Rodger and American Housewife vet Meg Donnelly).
The key art (shown in full below) also evokes a gothic little show called American Horror Story, what with its moody vibe, the dark talons in the foreground forming a “heart,” and the font used for the tagline at top.
Premiering Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 8/7c, The Winchesters is described as the “epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world.”
Fans of the mothership series, of course, have already been told some tales about John and Mary’s early days, but “we’re going to give it to you in a cool way that you don’t quite expect,” Drake Rodger told TVLine in the video Q&A above, adding that the pair’s first encounter is “a supernatural meet-cute.”
In preparing to take on the iconic roles, both Rodger and Donnelly looked to their characters’ previous portrayers, including Jeffrey Dean Morgan as adult John. The stars were also able to call upon Winchesters executive producer/narrator and Supernatural vet Jensen Ackles for guidance during filming.
“He was on set every single day of the pilot, just like being super collaborative, giving us notes, telling us about the universe that we might not know about,” Donnelly shared. “So it was really good insight.”

I still want to know why it’s called The Winchesters when Mary and John aren’t married in this…unless they get married in the first episode.

Because their claim to fame is being the parents of Sam & Dean Winchester. “John & Mary” sounds too generic and could be about anything.
Because they will eventually become The Winchesters. I’m confused as to why that’s not obvious?

Seeing as the parent show changed the original back story itself and they showed angels wiping their minds multiple times I don’t see why this is a big deal unless you’re looking for a reason to be negative before something airs.
How did they change the original story of John and Mary? I hope they don’t use mind wipes to erase the entire reason for this show to exist.

I’m struggling to get onboard with this one with the way Jensen set up his own studio then made plans for a series off the back of Jared Padalecki work without even mentioning it to Jared Padalecki. I love Jensen’s portrayal of Dean but that was a dick move. Hé worked shoulder to shoulder with the guy for 15 years then doesn’t even have the decency to mention it to him. When Jared told the world it was news to him, my heart stung for the guy as that must’ve been a sore one. They went on and on over the 15 years about how they were like brothers in real life, best mates. No. Family doesn’t screw family to line their own pocket. Sorry Jensen, it’s a no from me.
Totally agree with you Mike. It was a dick move. Jensen showed his true colours on that one, rode off on baby and left Jared on a dirt road somewhere behind him. I would’ve liked to see them collab together on this show too. If I was Jared Padalecki, I’d be pissed at the guy. Jensen must’ve been working on that a long time without so much as a single word. He’s acting like he owns the rights. Probably does now as who knows what will be after the Winchesters. Young Bobby and Rufus ? Was looking forward to seeing him on the boys but it was like watching him doing Michael all over again.

But it wasn’t Jared’s idea. He went off and did a remake of “Walker, Texas Ranger” of all things. It’s not like Jared was the original show’s creator. Jensen wasn’t required to get his permission, and if Jared is no longer upset, why should anyone else be?
Jensen wasn’t “required” but there is a thing called common decency. It’s not that hard but apparently Jensen can’t even do that.
Except Jared asked for Chuck Norris’ permission before going forward with the project. No Jensen didn’t need permission but a heads up would have been the decent thing to do. Fortunately they made up and all is good. Too bad this prequel isn’t being received well by fans but maybe after it airs quesions will be answered.
The American Horror Story Apocalyse poster had more than one version about the son of Lucifer. Sam is the vessel of Lucifer. Is this maybe a hint that even tough Jensen apparently forgot about Sam when he announced this prequel, Sam is going to be a plot point of the show, as he should’ve been since the announcement?

Listen I’ve never seen a single episode of supernatural but is a fan of all the TVDUs and I have a feeling that the hardcore fans are gonna be as hard on this as they were on legacies. And this is coming from someone who loved legacies too. But the hardcore fans hated how different it was and it seem like this is a repeat of that. But I complete understand why people are against this if they completely changed the origin story

I say it again I have lost respect for Jensen because of this show. He claimed Jared to be his brother and then cheated him out of a part in this show. But I guess it’s for the best. When this show is sharing time with the voices at the bottom of the Kola bore hole Jared won’t be there. Jensen you really are a jerk. But Jared is not a b****. Take that title too. By the way my real and only brother died last night. But it was easier for you Jensen to reject yours.

I would rather have my eyes wired open tied to a chair and watch 15 years of The Room than watch this. Then they could switch over to Samurai Cop. Then follow up with Glen or Glenda. That would be a total of 45 years. Come to think of it I would be happier. Cause afterwards I would be dead.

I really hope they’re planning a concrete ending for this season because there is no way NextStar or whatever the CW’s new owner is called is going to renew anything currently on the network after next season. Just doesn’t make sense with where they want to take network. So anything that was renewed or ordered to series needs to figure something out so they don’t leave fans on a cliffhanger.
Reading these comments brings back such lovely warm memories of the start of almost every Supernatural season and the introduction of every new character with Supernatural fans saying how awful it will be and trashing it based on nothing but a couple of rumors, a brief description or a poster and Dean/Sam fans attacking the other one. I really do miss Supernatural, my favorite show ever.
I agree. All the negative posters, haven’t seen an episode and already know it’s awful.. .? Crystal balls maybe? Lol. I’m a die hard fan of the original, and eagerly await this show. Negative posters…um, just don’t watch. Plenty of other shows to watch. Self-fulfilling prophecies already assure you’ll hate it. Save your time, watch something else.
You’d think a die hard fan of the original would at least understand other fans not liking how it craps on canon. And yes, the original show changed some things in a stupid way, but that doesn’t excuse writing a whole prequel that does nothing but crap on the OG show. People are allowed to express not liking something, or the premise of something on a site related to that thing. Even as you are allowed to like the idea and plan to watch.
I don’t watch any CW shows. I’d love to have more shows to watch and I’d love to root for the underdog network but sheesh their shows are either snoozers or cringe fests. I think “Cult” was the last CW show I watched in its entirety before bailing, if not the only one. I’ve seen some of “Supernatural” here and there over the years but it’s ehhh, still I’d probably type that it’s better than the rest of their progrums. However, I am going to give “The Winchesters” a chance and hope for the best.
So have they explained at some point how they are getting away with all the supernatural things happening in this show, when we were TOLD John knew nothing of the supernatural until Mary died? Honestly, this is the reason I can’t get myself interested in the show – I hate that they seem to be totally screwing with the entire premise of Dean and Sam’s terrible upbringing. If there is a “plausible” reason given – like alternate universe or John being given amnesia or something please let me know.
Does this show need to exist? I mean really…. This show, along with House of the Dragon, feel like Creative Dead-end Forgone Conclusion Narratives. We know where these shows should and must end up at, the Pilot of the Main Shows. So no matter what Creative direction or “awesome” arcs they have in mind, they always have to end up going into the Main Show no matter what. This just feels like a waste of resources to be honest. A sequel series would’ve been a much better avenue.

This show looks like crap because it destroys canon and any “fix” they try to do to make it fit the original show will make the Winchesters pointless because none of the action will matter. This would be true even if Sam/Jared were involved. So why bother with this lame premise at all?

Well, you are lying. This prequel is garbage, with or without Jared. And we all know how aggressive Ackles fans can’t leave Jared and Walker alone.
