It’s been real, O’Neals.
ABC has cancelled family sitcom The Real O’Neals after two seasons, TVLine has learned. Noah Galvin starred as gay teen Kenny, whose decision to come out sent shockwaves through his tight-knit Catholic family; Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope) and Jay R. Ferguson (Mad Men) co-starred as Kenny’s parents Eileen and Pat.
O’Neals had an encouraging start to Season 2, landing an order for three additional episodes in November. But by the time it wrapped up its second season in March, it ranked as ABC’s least-watched comedy, averaging just 3.1 million viewers a week. The cancellation ends its series run at a total of 29 episodes.
The writing was on the wall in late March when cast member Matt Shively, who played Kenny’s older brother Jimmy, signed on to play the lead role in NBC’s since-scrapped comedy pilot Spaced Out.
Think it was a sin for ABC to cancel The Real O’Neals? Enter the confessional booth — er, the comments — and unburden your soul.
Sad, but the quality did drop
True. Season one was hilarious. Season two, not so much due to many missteps including the focus on VP Murray and Eileen’s relationship. Still sad, though.
Not surprising but sad . It was a really good show that deserved better
I am not saddened to see this show go at all. It was beyond disrespectful to have a scene where a statue of the Virgin Mary was over a toilet bowl and two “Catholic” boys who enjoyed watching pornographic films on a laptop computer.
Yeah those teenage Catholics steer clear of the pornography…
Heaven forbid.
Ikr what awful sinners
Firstly We aren’t supposed to stray of topic
Secondly u do realize how much of a hypocrite u are, right?
I’m totally about to stray of topic. You call them sinners as if u are not a sinner yourself.
The thing about people who call themselves Christians is that you’ll always use ur beliefs as a way to be rude, hateful and inhumane. Last time I check there was a story on the bible were Jesus taught hypocrites, like you, not to condemn people as sinners when you’ll are also sinners. You’ll always preach Faith, love, hope, honesty and forgiveness yet fail to do so in your own lives. Instead you’ll practice judgment, hatred and dishonesty. It’s quite pathetic how snakes call themselves turtle doves
I agree with you 100%
Newsflash: not everyone believes in your god.
Best jokes in the whole show !!!
As a Catholic person the show didn’t bother me one bit, the wife and I actually enjoyed the show and will be sad to see it go.
There are worse things to get upset about than a tv show.
Thank you
You are one of the few Good hearted people in this cruel world of ours
And for that I thank u
So let’s dictate what is respectfull according to Catholics as a standard.
Right I’m not being funny or anything but who are you to criticise this amazing show?
It is funny and very heart warming and there were no cringe moments what so ever, Just funny moments. I am to believe that your catholic as of that comment. NEWS FLASH any film or TV show with Catholics in always discriminates against the LGBTQ community. So when the LGBTQ community take a little bit of a laugh with religion and being gay you get all defensive about it, If you can’t take it then don’t dish it out.
Yea :)
It got taken off the air. It is not a surprise. It’s ratings were very low- least watched comedy. Apparently not everyone agreed with your opinion.
You’re an ass, and a prude. Learn to have a sense of humor. I am Catholic, and I LOVED it!
Please tell me you’re kidding. All the crap that’s going on and this is what you have to complain about.
i’m so heartbroken!
I couldn’t say it better!!

Sorry about that I was trying to reply to, and set straight Brandy Walker.
I’m also pretty heartbroken about the show’s cancellation
It’s sad. It was a good and important comedy that probably would have done better on MTV or the CW. They might have given it a chance like with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. As a gay man, I did feel it had a problem with reinforcing stereotypes though.
We all at that age looked at the stereotypes.
The ratings were bad, but the controversies certainly hurt too. Galvin slamming Colton Haynes coming out story and people (including Grey’s star Sara Ramirez) taking issue with the portrayal of bisexuals.
Deserves to get cancelled. Very unfunny with cringe inducing moments.
Not unhappy with this. Once the lead actor decided to tell other older gay actors who drove things forward so he could take this role snottily that ‘you’re acting wrong’ (but in cruder terms), this show should have recast him. Hope he’s forever in corpse of the week roles in procedurals because of that; he ruined a sure thing show and pretty much sealed its death with his poor attitude.
It wasn’t smart, but it wasn’t wrong.
He is just a young guy. He will learn soon enough how inappropriate it was. This show deserved better.
I must have been watching a different show, you couldn’t be more wrong.
Disappointing. It was a funny and heartfelt family comedy, and even if it wasn’t perfect (and couldn’t please everyone in the LGBT community), there is a void with it gone.
Hopefully now Martha Plimpton winds up on something good.
Kenny was self centered brat and not very likable… hard to build a show around that.
In other words, he was a teenager. I liked that they resisted the usual cliche of “gay kid is always good, everyone else is the problem.” The reality is ANYONE can be an a-hole.
I wish there was a like button on this page
It should have been on Freeform.
Not a funny show. Not a surprise.
Thank god. This was the worst tv show ever.
Ugh, I really loved this show, especially the mother and son relationship. The Halloween episode with Britney Spears and Beyonce was epic. Why ABC :(
Yes! So many wonderful, hilarious moments!
I can’t believe it’s gone. This was my favorite sitcom ever.
Good riddance.
I love the show and the fact that it was a positive per trail of coming out and growing up gay and I’m very saddened to see the show canceled
the blood bath continues at ABC
okay so when is it being announced that martha plimpton is gonna be on “the good fight”
I’d like to see a reboot of Raising Hope!
I suspected this a few days ago. I have a friend who is a writer on the show, and made some vague, angry comments…
I’m not sad to see this one get the axe. I didn’t care for it.
This is the most disappointing pre-Up Front information released yet!
Most importantly, these actors are still people. Losing jobs and picking up the pieces of a situation out of their control!
Hands down the most original and worth sitcom on ABC, and was comprised of a stellar ensemble!
You won’t find anything like this for a bit guys!
So true. We don’t often see something really different and funny. The Real O’Neals was both. I wish the cast well.
Right? This was the one ABC show that felt real…well real for a sitcom lol
Black-ish is ABC’s lowest rated comedy on Wednesday… often w/ 4.x million. Meanwhile, recently axed Last Man Standing got *better* ratings Fridays than Black-ish. American Housewife just got a season 2. As of this moment, we don’t know about Speechless. Ratings are scattered & critical darlings (Black-ish, Mod Fam) get to skate. Also keep this in mjnd: Equally decrepit The Middle is still always as solid as MF & it’s that snobbish show that picked up a *2* season renewal & cast payraise. Seems to be luck of the draw.
I loved this show. I really hate that it is cancelled. Maybe America wasn’t ready for such a frank and open view of an openly gay teen.
Or America just didn’t like a horribly written television show. It happens. A lot.
Sadly, I expect you’re right. It’s a loss for the rest of us, though.
